JUBILEE MEMORIAL HOME. ANNUAL DANCE. With many fresh, urgent demands upon the generosity of the public, there is always a danger that the longestablished institutions may be forced into the background and their good work temporarily forgotten. But this is not the case in Christchurch. The Jubilee Memorial Home, at Woolston, where many old persons spend their declining years in comfort and happiness, makes only one appeal—a very modest one—each year. A dance is held at the home, and the proiits are used to provide extra comforts for the inmates. This year's dance was held last night, and was most enjoyable. It was organised by the Rev. F. A. Tooley and the matron and staff of the home. The rooms used for dancing had been decorated, under the direction of Mr B. Burgess, with streamers of blue, lemon, lavender, and pink, Chinese lanterns, and umbrellas and coloured lights. Music was supplied by Bryson's band. Mr W. Cooper was master of ceremonies. The matron. Miss F. Gill, who welcomed the guests, wore a frock of black satin beaute, with cape sleeves composed of small frills of black georgette, and a black panne velvet coatee with collar of white fur. Mrs Tooley wore a black satin frock, and a coatee o£ ; green velvet. The ladies present included Sister C. Cotter, Nurses M. O'Neill, L. Leslie, L. Dale, M. Mannix, and O. Bradshaw, and Misses M. Pagey, P. Bolt, B. La Fontaine, R. Davies, V. Newman, N. Fergison, and B. Eastwick, all members of the staff, and Mesdames W. Burgess, W. Cooper, F. Dolan, E R Walton, Melntyre, J. D. Winterburn, L. Weir (Hurunui) entertained a large number of friends to celebrate the coming-of-age of their eldest son, Fredrick. The ballroom was decorated for the occasion with spring flowers, and coloured streamers. The time passed pleasantly with musical items and dancing to music supplied by Dalzell's band. During the supper hour, Mr Weir presented a gold key to his son.

Voller, pupils and former pupils of Madame Josephine Ottlee gathered in the private reception room of the Cafe Frascati last nignt to wish her happiness in her new home in Melbourne, Australia. About 100 guests were present, including former pupils from Rangiora, Leeston, and other country districts. Madame Ottlee wore a handsome frock of sapphire blue panne velvet made with a wide back panel forming a train, the neck of the bodice being outlined with sequins, and finished with a shoulder spray of .eesias and daphne, presented to her on her arrival. Mrs Quarrell's frock of greybeige georgette was relieved with a gold and blue beaded design, and her blue scarf was patterned in shades of beige. Mrs Voller wore a frock of black lace and a coatee of henna chiffon velvet. An entertaining programme of games and competitions had been arranged for the guests, and community singing was led by Mr Kenneth Archer, accompanied by Miss Leila Black. After supper, Mr Stanley Buchanan, on behalf of the guests, presented silver table napkin rings to Madame Ottlee, Mr Stahle, and to Miss Mary Stahle, and wished them success in their new home. Mrs Westby Sheppard and Mr James Cocks, who, with Mr Stanley Buchanan, were among Madame Ottlee's first pupils, were also present. SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS' CONFERENCE. Mr J. J. Flewellen presided at the conference of the Presbyterian Sunday School Teachers' Union, held in St. Paul's Church Hall, Lichfield street. More than 100 delegates were present from Christchurch, Leeston, and Lyttelton. The conference opened with a devotional service, conducted by the Rev. A. C. Watson, who gave an address on ''The Spirit of Worship in the Sunday School." During the service a sacred solo was sung by Mr T. L. Tennent. Miss Kirkwood, youth committee representative, spoke of the aim and place of worship in the Sunday school. She explained that all the work of preparation before and during the school hour should be planned to sow seeds of reverence in the children. Tea was provided by the union and served by teachers of St. Paul's Sunday school and helpers. Before the evening session began, a snort period was spent with business discussions and sectional meetings. Mr A. J. Thompson, conductor of Knox Church choir, gave an interesting talk on "Music in Worship," to junior and intermediate teachers and superintendents present. He traced the growth of music from crude beginnings to present-day operas' and oratorios, and showed how much the growth of music had influenced the Christian life in the church. Music in worship for kindergarten and primary departments was the subject of an address given by Miss Jones and Miss Irene Todd to the kindergarten and primary teachers. Miss i. Todd, principal of the St. Andrew's kindergarten; told the story of the good Samaritan to a class of small children, who later acted it in their own way. Representative Bible class girls trained by Miss E. Batchelor, gave a dialogue, written by Miss Kirkwood. Members were reminded that the next meeting of the union will be held at St. Martins on the second Tuesday in August, when the Rev. A. W. Stuart will give an address and lantern lecture. A hearty vote of thanks was passed ■ o Mr Watson for his address, to Mr Hill, the board of managers of St. Paul's Church for the use of the hall, and to all who had in any way contributed to the success of the conference.
