NEW ZEALAND LEGION.
MEETING AT HORORATA. On Tuesday night a largely attended meeting was held at Hororata, when the ideals and aim' of the New Zealand Legion were e..pounded by Mr K. M. Gresson, Mr P. D. Hall, and Mr E. W. Cuddon, Christchurch. Mr Godfrey Hall presided. Mr P. D. Hall said there could never be an equitable administration system which divided the people into two or three sharply-divided classes and gave the control to one of them. The Dominion had long suffered from such an unfair and lopsided system, but the evils were not fully appreciated in! the good years. It needed the depression to bring them home to the people. Mr Gresson replied to a criticism j of the legion by Mr J. McCombs, M.P., | at Lyttelton on Saturday. He said no excuse coulo be found for RXr 3Vic* j Combs' statements. It was the unquestioned duty of every public man to inform himself on any movement which he was submitting to criticism. The legion's proposals had been fully indicated in the press of the Dominion, particularly in reporting the meetings of the legion council in Wellington, and these reports appeared before Mr McCombs spoke. If Mr McCombs had not read these reports he had no excuse and his neglect invalidated his criticism. The legion so far from being an enemy of Labour would, if successful, do more for the workers than for any other class in the community. It would consider great problems such as unemployment impartially and dispassionately, without the preiudice which was inevitable in a party system. As to the difKculty in an elective executive which I»Ir McCombs cited, the opposing points of view in the Cabinet would be presented to the House, which would decide. That was better than the present system, which submerged all points of view but the one the Government wished to present. The executive would, in the reformed Parliament, carry through the policy of the House. There would be no dragooning of members to support their party, whether in their judgment the party was right or wrong. Many questions were answered ana members enrolled. The following committee was elected by the meeting: Messrs Godhvy Hall, ,1. W. D. Hall, P. Phillips, G. Cirim, T. E. Pearson, A. Charles, A. ,T, Harris, H. Oliver, R. W. Felton, E. .r...,>kytV«*<S B.
