The Hon. G. J. Smith and Mrs Smith ("Riverlaw," St. Martins), who have been visiting Sydney, will return to Christchurch this morning. Mrs J. Chapman (Totara Valley, South Canterbury), who is visiting Christchurch for the Women's Institute conference, is the guest of Mrs T. Richards, Tancred street, North Linwood. Miss Betty Holmes and Mr G. Holmes (Rakaia) will leave to-day for a holiday visit to the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mrs Arthur Rose and Miss Esther Rose (Manchester street north) have returned from a visit to Wellington. Miss Eme Gallagher (Broadfield) is visiting relatives in Greymouth and Reefton. Miss Jean Newton and Mr T. Newton ("The Willows," Ashburton) will leave to-day for the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mrs F. G. Sowden (Aylesbury), president of the Kirwee Women's Institute, is attending the Dominion conference of Women's Institutes. Mrs H. B. Gordon (Wellington) is visiting her sister, Mrs John Deans, "Kirkstyle." Coalgate. Miss Dunlop (Pigeon Bay) and Miss Sylvia Orbell (Pentlow, South Canterbury) are the guests of Mrs R. E. Alexander, Agricultural College, Lincoln. Mrs M. Varley (Bay of Plenty), who is a delegate to the Women's Institutes conference, is the guest of Mrs Stephen Temple, Madras street north.

Miss Diana Orbcll (South Canterbury) is the guest of Miss Katherine Westenra, "Camla," Dunsandel.

Mrs H. J. Norman, president of the Springfield branch of the Women's Institute, is visiting Christchurch, and is the guest of Mrs G. F. Reddell, Nicholls street, Shirley.

Mrs A. P. Bruce ("Kinkora," Pendarves) is visiting Christchurch as the Chertsey delegate to the Women's Institutes' conference. Whether women at Helen Connon Hall should be allowed to smoke or not was a question discussed by the board of governors at a recent meeting. It was agreed that it was a matter for the house committee to decide; and the women students accordingly passed a resolution permitting smoking.

For the convenience of guests who will be attending the ball of the Loyal Orange Lodge to be held at Hornby on Friday, a bus will leave the Orange Hall, Worcester street, at 7.45 p.m.
