NORTH RANGITATA BRIDGE.

Tenders are being called by the Railway Department for the foundation work of the new steel-and-concrete bridge which the department is constructing over the north branch of the Rangitata river. The bridge will replace the present wooden structure which has been in use for nearly 60 years. The nwr bridge will be about 30 chains in length, comprising 31 spans of 80 feet and two spans of 40 feet each. The piers will be built of 12 reinforced concrete piles, and these Will be capped with concrete. Tl* foundation work will be done by tender, and the superstructure of steel will be made by the department at its own workshops at Aldington or Hillside. The site of the new bridge is 28 feet downstream from the present bridge and arrangements have been made for the small track diversions that will be necessary.
