COUNTY COUNCIL.

WAIREWA. •-*;,;■ The monthly meeting of the Wairewa County Council was held at the Council Chambers, Little River, when there were present:—Councillors J. O. Coop (chairman), \V. J. Allen, J. V. Chapman, F. Coop, T. Feather, and T. Thompson.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr John Reid was passed. Mr W. R. Leeder, county engineer, reported on work done during the month.

Cr. Chapman asked for permission on behalf of the Little River School Committee to take two loads of clay from the roadside. Permission was granted. Cr. Chapman said Mr H. Reid was getting out some metal, and he wanted to know if the council would purchase this metal delivered on the roadside. It was left to Crs. Chapman and Thompson to see Mr Reid and arrange the price. Cr. Chann.an said he had met the engineer and discussed with him the improvement at the junction of the Main and I'uaha roads. He thought the flat rop.d up the valley should be straightened out. The road would be much improved. Only one road was necessary up the valley. Cr. Thompson said shingle was required on the Port Levy road. The engineer said the shingle was being put on the at Little River at the cost of 6s a yard, and lower down the road at 5s 6d and 5s a yard. The shingle for Port Levy road would cost something like 10s, as only half loads could be taken up the road. The loads were being tallied by one of the council's men. The metalling of Port Levy road was left to Cr. Thompson and the engineer. Mr K. Parkinson, secretary of the Kaituna Church Euilding Committee, wrote asking the council if it could establish a cemetery at Kaituna for the district. Cr. F. Coop said the land had been given for both the church and the cemetery. The committee wished to vest the cemetery in the council. Half an acre was set aside at the back of the new church. The clerk said he had spoken to the Commissioner of Crown Lands in reference to this matter. The section could be transferred to the local authority or could be held in trust. The committee would prefer that it should be a public cemetery. It was suggested that the council should take over this cemetery, also the Little River Cemetery. The chairman said Mr W. F. Parkinson had offered the land. It was decided that the clerk make further enquiries as to the council's position in the matter. The Bank of New Zealand wrote in reference to overdraft accommodation for the present year, asking for particulars of the council's finances. It was decided to ask for an overdraft of £5500.
