NORTH CANTERBURY.

! KAIAPOI. The sum of £B3 was raised as the result of the chai'ity ball organised by , the business people of Kaiapoi in aid of the Kaiapoi' Unemployment Relief Fund. KAIKOURA. The fortnightly meeting of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union was held at the residence of Mrs R. L. Withers. The president (Mrs F. Robertson) was in the chair. The secretary read several interesting stories of foreign works, while those present sewed for the forthcoming bazaar. Pleasure was expressed at the recovery of Mrs W. Sabiston from her illness. A meeting was held in the Public Library on Friday night, over which Dr. R. L. Withers presided, when a strong committee was set up to make arrangements for a conversazione to be held at the Masonic Hall on Friday evening next, on the occasion of a farewell to Mr and Mrs N. R. Farrant. A sub-committee was appointed consisting of Messrs W. Moir, J. Murray, F. J. Monk, E. Flower, P. Burgoyne, and G. Morris ("secretary), with power to add representatives from the various sports bodies and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association.

The following have been appointed a statutory committee for Southern Marlborough under the Small Farms Relief of Unemployment Act: —Messrs P. R. Wilkinson, Commissioner of Crown Lands (chairman), Patrick Adair, sen., and W. M. Acton-Adams. In a seven-a-side football match between Kincaid and Suburban schools, Kincaid won by three points, following an even game. Mr Hay was referee. At basketball the match ended in a draw—six all.

CULVERDEN. Mr and Mrs Arthur Burke, of Culverden, were welcomed home in the Amuri Hall. Mr and Mrs Burke were conducted to the hall by a tin band. The "Mayor of Culverden" (Mr G. Wade) read an address of welcome phrased in legal terms. The evening was spent in dancing, with an interlude by Messrs G. Wade and R. Powell who gave their own version of "The Mountains of Mourne." Dance numbers were supplied by Mrs W. Thomson, Misses Ives and Dorothy Dalzell, Miss E. Black and Messrs R. Chapman, D. Davidson, R. Dalzell, and M. Richardson, i

WAIKARI. A social arranged by the Presbyterian Junior Bible Class was held in the Sunday school room. The Rev. J. H. Robertson presided, and the evening was spent with songs, games, and competitions. Songs were contributed by Miss J. Fenwick, Mrs T. Widdowson, Miss Lois Sheridan, and Zoe Carlyle. In the badge competition, in which each pupil wore a badge representing a New Zealand town, four competitors, Zoe Carlyle, Colin Craig, Hugh Home, and George Newman, drew for first place. Other competitions were won by Miss Fenwick, June Ellery, Betty Inch, Joyce Horne, and Colin Craig. Mr R. McCreanor, who has been transferred as ganger on the permanent way staff at Waikari from Dunsandel, has now taken up his duties. Mr W. Mcßobie is relieving as postmaster in place of Mr T. L. Dillon, who is on annual leave.

KOWAI BUSH. At the monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union there was a good attendance. Several new members were enrolled. Mrs Cox presided. Much interest was taken in the quilt made by members to be sent to the relief depot. An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Ross Macdonald on moccasin making. A vote of thanks to Mrs Macdonald was proposed by Mrs Anderson. A competition for "something new from something old" was won by Mrs Cox, with Mrs Gold second, and Mrs Starr third. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Young, Mrs Birdling, and Mrs Starr. Mr Alley, representing the Workers' Educational Association travelling library, enrolled subscribers. The hockey match between a team from the Springfield School and a team from Kowai Bush, resulted in a draw, three all.

TEMPLETON. The Templeton School basketball team went to Hornby last week to play against the Hornby team. The match resulted in a win for Hornby by six to two. Mrs Cree was the referee. Last week the senior boys of the school received some instruction in rifle shooting (.303) by permission of Captain K. J. Walker. About 20 boys, in four teams, took part in the shooting at four targets in the large gravel pit near the school. A social evening was held in the library in aid of the library funds, which were considerably augmented. The competition winners were Mrs J. Childs and Mr W. Smith.

Some social evenings and afternoons convened by the women members of the Templeton Croquet Club to augment the club's funds, have been given. On Saturday evening, Mr and Mrs R Darroch were the hosts. Cards and music were enjoyed. The winners of the competitions were Mrs J. Gordon, Mr A. Blakemore; consolation, Mrs J. Rowe, and Mr H. B. Kissel. A dainty supper was served.

PREBBLETON. I A pleasing programme was presented in the Prebbleton Parish Hall, when a concert was given to assist the funds of the Methodist Church, the performers being members of the Papanui and Tai Tapu churches' choirs. The concert opened with a one-act play, entitled "Penelope and Her Suitors," in which the cast was:—Penelope, Miss Ida Herrick; Mrs Croaker, Mrs Hamilton; Tosscr. the Rev. N. P. Larsen; Pitcher, Mr J. Dyas; Chalks, Mr E. Tobeck. Other items were: Humorous reading by Mrs Hamilton; vocal duets by Misses Craig and Salkeld, and Messrs Salkeld and Jones; duet in character, Mrs Larsen and Miss Griffiths; songs by Miss Joan Griffiths, Miss Harris, Miss Craig, Miss Salkeld, Messrs O. M. Jones and Salkeld. Community singing was also enjoyed. At the conclusion the Rev. N. P. Larsen thanked the Papanui performers for coming so far to assist. and Mr H. Marshall moved a vote of thanks to the Tai Tapu performers. On Friday afternoon the school football team went to Broadfield, where the local boys were defeated by 8 points to 0. Mr J. Kennedy was the referee.

The sixth anniversary of the building of a new Presbyterian church at Prebbleton was observed by holding a tea meeting and concert in the Public Hall. The tea tables were in charge of the following women:—Mesdames G. Macrae, Henderson, Brown, Pilet, Clarke, Taylor, Askin, Riches, Chesman, Millar, Basher, McClintock, Wing, Port, Misses Laishley, Millar, E. Cain, M. Cain, Johns, and W. Hern. The concert programme, consisting of choruses, vocal, instrumental, and elocutionary items, was provided by the Knox Church choir, under the leader-1 ship of Mr A. G. Thompson. ,■ '

LITTLE RIVER. A very enjoyable dance, organised by members of St. John's Church, was held in the Town Hall, which was decorated with streamers and greenery. Bowls of flowers were used on the supper tables. Dance music was supplied by the local orchestra and extras were played by Mrs S. Birdling and Miss W. Stott. Mr H. C. Stuart was master of ceremonies. A waltzing competition was won by Mrs T. Wood and Mr B. Wright, and a lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs A. Dawber and Mr T. Brankin. Songs were sung by Miss Margaret Keenan. BROOKSIDE. At the residence of Mrs A. E. Withcll, "Raywell," Brookside, the Leeston Methodist Circuit Ladies' Guild held its ninth annual meeting, the Rev. F. B. Lawrence presiding over a good attendance. A report on the year's activities was presented by the secretary, Miss N. Doak, and adopted. It stated that the outstanding event of the year had been a chrysanthemum show, held in May, which had been most successful. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £5 10s. Officers elected were: President, Mrs T. W. Brooks; vice-presidents, Mesdames F. B. Lawrence, John Heslop, and A. Tong, and Misses Sheat and V. Bowes; secretary, Miss N. Doak; treasurer, Mrs Joseph Brooks; quarterly board representative, Mrs Barker.
