NEW ZEALAND LEGION.

; MEETING HELD AT CHEVIOT. i A meeting was held in the Cheviot Public Hall on Tuesday night under the auspices of the Cheviot branch of the Farmers' Union, at which Mr John Mac Gibbon, chairman of the Canterbury Division of the New Zealand Legion, and Mr S. G. Holland, a member of the committee, delivered addresses on the aims and objects of the legion. The president, Mr T. Stevenson, presided, and there was an attendance of about 50 persons representative of the business and the farming community. Mr Mac Gibbon spoke on the lines of his previous addresses throughout Canterbury, and dealt with the founding of the legion. He stated that the national condition of affairs at the present time had primarily been brought about by the people themselves. The aim of the legion was to do away altogether with party politics, and to elect to Parliament representatives that would not be pledged to support any party but would be guided by their own intellect and consciences. The speakers mentioned that the chief obstacle that the legion was confronted with was the apathy of the people, and it was hoped that they would enrol 200,000 doctors to stand behind their movement. At the conclusion of the addresses a number of questions were asked, and those dealing with the legion were answered by Mr Mac Gibbon. The chairman moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speakers. At the con- | elusion of the meeting about 25 new al, ih® were enrolled.
