July 22 South Canterbury Hunt (one event*. August 5, 9, 11—New Zealand Metropolitan T.C. August 26—Auckland T.C. TURF GOSSIP. Should Have Won. Thurina gave another excellent display at Trentham yesterday and gained ground at each fence, but was steadied in behind the leaders on the flat. He moved up rounding the home turn, and when he ran up to Jen at the last fence his victory seemed assured. He screwed badly, however, and became unbalanced for a few strides, and Jen had him beaten. There was no doubt that his one bad iump brought about his defeat. Ho returned south last night. Quinopal, in the same race, again jumped badly and narrowly missed a fall in the early stages.

Encouraging Form. Nightly made a good impression by his second placing to the speedy Passion Fruit at Trentham yesterday. He hung on well and should develop into a good class three-year-old. He returned home last night. Unsuitable Conditions. Drumfire did not show any improvement in his race at Trentham yesterday. He was up near the leaders entering the straight, but stopped badly early in the run home. He is certainly no good in soft going, and will not do any better if produced to-morrow. Errantry is not partial to soft going, as yesterday he was never near the leading division in his race and finished well back. A Lazy Galloper. High Speed would win races if he could be made to do his best. Yesterday he put in some solid work over the concluding stages of his race, and in another stride would have paid a dividend. Hounslow's Good Display. Hounslow gave an outstanding display of jumping in his race at Trentham yesterday, and his only faulty effort was at the last fence which was almost flattened in the first round by Fallow. He slowed down approaching the obstacle and only scrambled over it, losing valuable ground. This undoubtedly cost him the race. The winner, Sir Musk, is a four-year-old by Musketoon, and this was his first win. A Class Horse. Cylinder's victory at Trentham yesterday suggested that he will have to be reckoned with in the new season's big events. He has had an interrupted career, and in addition to breaKing down as a three-year-old he contracted the trouble again on a visit to Australia last spring and was not raced until the Napier meeting last month. He has been nominated for the principal Australian spring races and is likeiy to make the trip in company with his half-brother Cyclonic. Cylinder is expected to contest the Winter Cup A Noil-Slayer. Tea Garden was made too much of in hia engagement at Trentham yesterday, especially for a non-stayer, and it was not surprising that he was found out in the straight. The disappointment of this race was Membo, who was a long way back for the whole journey. Such form would not point to his prospects in the Winter Hurdles to-morrow. Mounting Up. Merry Peel recorded his sixth second placing in seven starts when he acted as runner-up to Manawhenua at Trentham yesterday. He drew inside berth as on Tuesday, and although he was able to keep his place early he was squeezed back rounding the home turn and was in an unfavourable position entering the straight. He may not have beaten the winner in any case, but would have given him a lot more trouble. Merry Peel is in great form but is keeping up in the weights as a result of his consistent place-getting. A Quick Change. Manawhenua was ridden at Trentham on Tuesday by the stable apprentice, W. Lawson. and was seventh choice, finishing fourth. Yesterday, K. Voitre was substituted and the gelding was always a favourite. In his report to the Racing Conference the chief stipendiary steward pointed out the undesirable practice of owners sending out horses mounted by unskilled or incompetent riders on the first day of a meeting, and on the second day sending out the same horse mounted by a more competent rider, when the contrast in form was very conspicuous. In his opinion this was a practice upon which a sinister construction was liable to be placed. Expensive. Repudiation was one of the leaders from the start of the Petone Handicap at Trentham yesterday and was in third place entering upon the course proper. Later on Woodful, in making his run. seemed to interfere with her, as she stopped quickly and dropped right out of the contest. Racing To-morrow. Zeebrugge has been unable to walk since his breakdown at Trentham on Tuesday, but is expected to make a recovery. Tentative arrangements were made" yesterday to return south with Drum Fire and Heather Glow, but as it is possible that Zeebrugge will be able to travel on Monday, it was decided to remain for to-morrow's programme, and to get Zeebruggs home with his mates on Monday evening. Good Prospects. Emancipation's rare in the HitrhWeight Handicap at Trentham yesterday would point to his chance in the Winter Hurdles, and no doubt he will now be favourite.

TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Nominations for the two trotting events at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting will close to-day at 8 p.m., with the secretary, Mr S. P. Godfrey, ai the Canterbury Jockey Club's rooms. Nominations lor the August meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will close at noon tomorrow. •dcceptances for the trotting event at trie Waimate District Hunt Club's fixture will close at 9 p.m. to-ruor-row Acceptances for th" trotting event at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting will close on Monday at 9 p.m. Date of Forfeit. Forfeits are clue on or before Monday for the New Zealand Derby Trial, to be run by the Oaniaru Trotting Club at the Labur Day meeting, and the Champion Stakes, to be decided at the Ashburton Trotting Club's summer meeting. Improved Appearance. Sit Gowan appears to have brightened ijp again after his period of indisposition, and he did not show any effects of his recent trouble, when given useful work without the hopples at Addington yesterday. Track Conditions. The main track* at Addington was in fair order, although dead, yesterday morning, when there was a good deal of useful work performed by candidates in preparation for next month's meeting. All work was done about the centre of the track, the inside still being very wet.

Training Notes. Muriel de Oro, Tangatu, Thornworthy, and Clem Dawe were companions over a mile and a quarter. Thornworthy, going to the front at the end of a mi'e, had a good advantage at the post, which was reached in 3min lOsec. The first mile took 2min 36scc. Shaw's Trio. With a difference of two seconds between Pageant d'Or and Gold Country, Royal Silk separating the pair, this trio started on a mile and a quarter task. Pageant d'Or led for a mile in 2min 22 2-ssec, but he was passed by the others in the run home, Gold Country, who registered 2min 55sec, gaining a slight victory. E. C. McDermott worked Garner and Cloudy Range separately. The former trotted a mile in 2min 21 2-ssec, while Cloudy Range occupied 3min 31 2-ssec for twelve furlongs. After having taken 2min 25sec for the first mile. Wilbur White, in company with Great Author, finished on terms at the end of a mile and a half in 3min 34sec. Mountain Dell, Wilma Dillon, and Free Advice, starting in that order, were associated in a trial over one mile and five furlongs, which they left behind in 3min 47sec, the final half mile taking lmin 6sec. Mountain Dell finished best, nearly a length in front.

Display Spoilt. Vesuvius, Stanley T., Holly Bank, and John Jinks were to have been companions in a trial over a mile and a half; but the bout was disorganised when Stanley T. broke at the end of five furlongs and did not afterwards settle down. Vesuvius was in front all the way to register 3min 25sec. Nelson Ata, who started off in front of Lone Derby, and who was picked up at the end of a furlong by War Officer, did not give a very encouraging display in his bout over a mile and a half. He stayed with his companions for a mile, which took him 2min 25sec, but from there he began to drop back, and it took him 3min 40sec to complete the distance. He did not break on the journey. Sister Mary, who joined in with little more than a mile to go, gave a pleasing exhibition. Belinda and Silver de Oro were not on a record-breaking mission over a mile and a half, the pair finishing on terms in 3min 35 l-ssec, an even speed being maintained throughout. Both mares worked freely. G. Mouritz gave Margaret Chenault several circuits of unhoppled work. Indianapolis, conceding slight starts to Wrecker and General Wrack, finished in front of his mates at the end of a strongly run two miles in 4min 45sec. Indianapolis was keen to go much faster. Deceitful, who went for most of the journey in company with the above-mentioned three, gave a sound showing, although she was on occasions inclined to mix her gait. Roi l'Or, whose work is seldom of the very serious nature, was restricted to several rounds of slow cantering. Concessions. The new season's assessments having made their appearance, it is seen from the new list that several prominent performers of the season just concluding have had their handicap marks extended. Among the better performed horses who have benefited are Red Shadow, Free Advice, Kingcraft, Royal Silk, Vesuvius, and Wrackler. No alteration has been made in the case of either Roi l'Or or Harold Logan. The former is on 2min 6sec. 2min 38see, and 4min 22sec, and Harold Logan 2min 7sec, 3min 39sec, and 4min 20sec. Wrackler received his concession only as a pacer, he being let out a second over all distances. His marks now are 2min 9sec, 2min 42sec, and 4min 23sec. Youngsters in Team. B. Jarden is collecting a team of good proportions, his active list now numbering eight. One of the latest additions to his stable is Becky de Oro. Among the young horses under the New Brighton trainer are a rising three-year-old by Great Bingen-Yura Dillon; a gelding by Rey de Oro— Doraldina, a rising two-year-old; and a Jack Potts—Spanish Gold gelding of the same age. Spanish Gold is by Rey de Oro from Dollar Princess. A Reliable Pacer. One of the most consistent pacers in the Auckland province this season has been Homeward, who was bred in the South Island by Mr G. J. BarLon. Homeward raced extensively at Epsom and on the country circuit, and was 18 times in the money in 24 starts, her total earnings being £540. Her main successes were gained at a mile and a quarter, but she was twice placed in her only starts at two miles. Next season she should do well in good company over the longer distance. AMERICAN RACING. PLANS FOR WINOOKA. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —AT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—OOPTEIOTIT.) (Received July 13, 7.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 12. A message from San Bruno, California, states that Winooka will make his United States debut on the Tanforan track in a special match race ' again Frisky Matron on July 29, over five furlongs and a half, for a purse of 10,000 dollars, offered by the San Mateo Jockey Club. The Australian horse will carry 120 pounds, and the Californian 105. It was originally Elanned to start Winooka at Seattle, ut his owners say that the coming race will probably be the only one on the coast before leaving for the east, where they are negotiating for matches against Equipoise and Gallant Sir. Frisky Matron holds the Tanforan six furlongs record, in lmin 11 2-ssec.

WELLINGTON R.C. CYLINDER WINS HANDICAP. BIGGER TOTALISATOR TURNOVER. (TRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) i WELLINGTON, July 13. The Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting was continued at Trentham to-day in fine weather, but the sky was heavily overcast and drizzling rain fell before the last race. The track was a little holding and was slower than on Tuesday. There were several surprise results. The attendance was large. The totalisator investments were £25,783 10s, compared with £ 16,068 on the second day last year, an increase of £9805 10s. The total increase for the two days is £14,717 10s. Thurina was considered the best proposition in the Makiri Hack Steeplechase, but the extra weight settled him when called upon in the straight. Jen took charge a mile from home and led into the straight from Thurina and Tunbridge. Thurina challenged after crossing the final fence, at which he made his only faulty jump, and appeared likely to win again, but Jen kept him at bay and won by more than a length, with Tunbridge a similar distance away. Kaokaoroa and Fine Acre were together next. Gueress baulked and Solanio fell. From End to End. Passion Fruit, a two-year-old by Lord Quex from Los Vegas, won the Trial Plate practically from end to end, and ran away from the field in the straight. Nightly was always well up and followed the winner into the straight. He had no chance of reducing Passion Fruit's advantage, but kept his place to hold oft' Cylinder's half-brother, Cyclonic. En Vidette was a close fourth in front of Epigram and Secrecy. Two-year-olds filled the lirat eight places. A Decisive Win. Swift and Sure endeavoured to win the Seatoun Handicap from the start, but had to submit to defeat in the last few strides. He was followed into the straight by Mercian Prince, Currajong, and Thrasher, and appeared to be a comfortable winner until Mercian Prince shot up on the inside and beat him decisively. Thrasher was a fair third, a short head in front of Speed, who, hard-ridden throughout the journey, finished strongly. Currajong, Cardinal Moon, and High Grader were next. A Strong Finish. Gold Knight, favourite for the Corunna Hurdles, was going like a winner at the home turn, but could not make any impression in the straight. Paleta acted as pacemaker throughout, but Hounslow was on terms with him at the last fence. The latter had him beaten at the distance and his victory was proclaimed, but Sir Musk came from the back with a telling finishing

run and beat Hounslow by a head. Paleta was a fair third, with Gold Knight next. Cylirder Returns to Form. Cylinder showed a return to his best form by winning the Parliamentary Handicap. He was first oui but was then held in behind the leaders and followed Beacon Fire and Protomint into the straight, with Little Doubt, Retract, and Seatown next. Beacon Fire weakened inside the distance, and Cylinder drew out. Seatown then challenged on the inside, but although making a characteristic finishing effort, he was beaten by a neck. Beacon Fire was two lengths back in front of Chang, Little Doubt, Retract, and Protomint. Almost a Surprise. The High-weight Handicap was responsible for poor showings by some of the fancied contestants, including Adventus, Membo, and Strong Light. The rank outsider of the field, Lovecourt, who missed success by inches, would have paid a sensational dividend for a win. Tea Garden and Shootist acted as pacemakers till the straight was entered. Valueless was in charge at the distance and appeared to be an easy winner, but just beat Lovccourt, who was in front a stride past the post. Emancipation came from the back to beat March Alone for third money. High Pitch and Adventus were nt:-:t, with Membo and Strong Light bringing up the rear. An Attractive Performance. Manawhenua registered an attractive performance to win the Members' Handicap. He was close in behind Slippery, Royal Hunting, and Glenvane entering the straight, and had these beaten a 100 yards from the post. Merry Poel then put in a claim on the insida, but had no chance with Manawhenua, who beat him by a length. Royal Hunting was a good third in front of Slippery, All Humbug, and Glenvane. Form Borne Out. First day's iu.m was borne out in the Petone Handicap, Amyril again beating Pladie. The former was always in front and was going away at the finish to win very easily, while Pladie beat the remainder almost as decisively, Woodful finished strongly in third place. Sir Pombal and West Tor were next and Repudiation was last.
