TRAMP TO LAKE RUBICON.

RAILWAY EXCURSION. The fourth tramp organised by the Railway Department this season will be held next Sunday to Lake Rubicon, the scene of the first mystery tramp last year. The train will leave Christchurch at 8.15 a.m. and is expected to arrive back in the city shortly before 7 p.m. Excursionists will detrain at a private level crossing which gives access to the Mount Torlesse estate, and will reach Lake Rubicon after a short walk. A feature of this trip is the approach to Lake Rubicon. The lake is completely hidden in the foothills of the Torlesse range, and is reached after a short walk along the crest of a chain of low hills. The mountains of the Torlesse range and the higher foothills are. well covered with snow, and the first view of the lake, with its heavy coating of ice sparkling in the sun, is magnificent. The dark gash of the Rubicon river in the foreground, and the vivid green of the birch trees offer a remarkable contrast to the surrounding snow-clad hills and mountains, and the wild beauty of the scene makes a deep impression. A long rest for lunch and ice skating have been arranged at the lake, and skating enthusiasts will be able to spend three hours on the ice. a rest at the lake trampers will follow an easy route to Springfield, which should be reached about 5 p.m. The distance of the tramp is between 10 and 11 miles, and except for the low range of hills guarding Lake Rubicon, does not entail any climbing for those who prefer level walking., An alternative route to Springfield over the hills has been arranged for i those who want a more strenuous tramp.
