THE PRESBYTERY.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery was held yesterday, the moderator, the Rev. L. McMaster, presiding. The chairman reported that, at the invitation of Bishop West-Watson, he had attended as the Presbytery's representative at the service at the cathedral, when the New Zealand column of the Church Army had been consecrated. He said the army was working with all denominations, and he thought the Presbytery should give it unstinted support. Reporting on the Presbyterial visit to the Waikari charge, the Rev. T. W. Armour said that a new Sunday school had been opened at Hawarden free of debt. On his motion the Presbytery placed on record its appreciation of the fact that the spiritual life of the community was being maintained. The Rev. T. Paterson, reporting on the visit to the Malvern charge, said that in spite of the scattered district, the work was being well done. A new manse had been built at Sheffield and might be a financial strain on the parish. The new building was a particularly fine one. On the motion of the Rev. L. M. Rogers, the minute limiting the amount to be borrowed for the new Sunday school building at Spreydon to £l5O, was rescinded. Mr W. H. Rose said the estimated expenditure on the new building was £532, but the Government grant would probably reduce that amount by £3O. The committee in charge already had £l2l on hand, so that about £4OO would be required. The amounts granted to each parish from the new century fund, however,' were limited to £3OO. In the past, he said, the Sunday school had been held in a private residence, and during the last two years £l2l had been raised to enable a Sunday school building to be erected. The section would cost about £l6O. | The Spreydon congregation could raise about £SO or £6O each year for the payment of interest and the repayment of the loan. At the present! time the congregation was only paying its way and had a debt of £230 on the church. On his motion it was decided to recommend the Spreydon congregation to apply to the new century fund for a grant of £2O and a loan toward its new Sunday school building.
