DESTRUCTION OF DEER.
DAMAGE IN WAIMAKARIRI WATERSHED. RIVER TRUST AUTHORISED TO SPEND MONEY. Notification that no objection would be taken if the Waimakariri River Trust spent money for the destruction of deer in the watershed of the river, which is outside the trust's area, was received at a meeting of the trust yesterday afternoon. At a previous meeting a sub-committee was set up to enquire into the legal position and it was decided to spend £2OO on the work of destruction if the expenditure was found to be legal. The trust's solicitors were asked for an opinion and acting on their advice a letter was written to the Audit Department on the subject. Yesterday an answer was received from the department stating that no objection would be made to the spending of the money. The chairman (Mr J. H. Blackwell) stated that at present Captain G. F. Yerex, an inspector for the Department of Internal Affairs, was visiting the watershed to investigate the amount of damage being done by the deer there. He would return to Christchurch on Friday and would confer with the sub-commit-tee and with any members of the trust who wished to be present on Friday evening.
