UNEMPLOYMENT.

STRIKE PROPOSAL. WOMEN PICKETS AT WORK. (PBEBB ASSOCIATION TELEOB.VM.) WELLINGTON, July 12. A determined effort is being made by the Wellington Relief Workers' Union to get the men out on strike. One picket of women and three pickets of men visited the jobs to-day, but they met with only slight success. The official statement is that 200 are on strike. PROPOSAL REJECTED. BALLOT AT AUCKLAND. (FRKS3 ASSOCIATION Tll.E'ill VSi.) AUCKLAND, July 12. A proposal that the Auckland relief workers should strike in sympathy with those who ceased work in Hawke's Bay recently was rejected by ballot by a majority of more than two to one. It was stated that of 8000 relief workers in the Auckland area entitled to vote, only 3000 took part in the ballot. The actual voting figures were not divulged. An effort was made to hold a demonstration of unemployed at Victoria Park, but only about 100 men attended. After a wait of about half an hour, the men were told that it was not proposed to proceed with the meeting, but that they should meet later at the Trades Hall. The meeting at the h3ll was attended by approximately 150 men and several women. It was addressed by Mr H. Kay, chairman of the Napier and District Relief Workers' Association, and by Mr J. Clancy, also of Hawke's Bay. At the conclusion the leaders declined to make a statement indicating the nature of the business considered. POSITION IN HAWKE'S BAY. (PRZS« ASSOCIATE* IBLEOHAH.) NAPIER, July 12. The Social Service Committee has announced that it cannot guarantee to feed the relief works strikers during the week, although all efforts will be put forward to do so. Some strikers applied for work this morning. In the meantime the Napier leader of the men has gone to Gisborne, and another leader is in Auckland. The object of these visits is not known. BIG GATHERING PROPOSED. The Christchurch Unemployed Workers' Association has decided to arrange a big gathering of unemployed on Sunday, July 30, in Cranmer square, to protest against the existing conditions of distributing relief to the needy in Christchurch. The association felt that better results would accrue from a Sunday meeting than a week-day one. The association has also decided to take no action in the meantime towards holding a ballot on the question of a national strike of relief workers. A WAIMAIRI DECISION. A report by the unemployment sub-committee of the Waimairi County Council was submitted to the meeting of the council last evening. The report stated that Mr P. R. Climie of the Unemployment Board, and Mr R. T. Bailey, of the Labour Department, attended the meeting, when a general discussion took place regarding "over the fence" work in Waimairi. Attention was drawn to, and numerous instances were given of, abuse of the intention of the scheme, and it was recommended that it be discontinued. The committee decided that, as from the end of the present period, no more relief labour be provided on private properties, where relief workers are at present working, or had worked in the past, and in respect of the approved new applications in hand that men be granted for a period of four weeks only, after which all "over the fence" work be discontinued.
