SOLICITOR COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.
Theft of £2lll admitted. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) r HASTINGS, July 12. A plea of guilty was entered by Albert Lionel Bailey, solicitor of Napier, to Ave charges, T>ne involving the theft of moneys totalling ztni lis lid, three of forgery, and one ol making a false declaration, when he appeared on remand before Justices of the Peace in the Police Court to-day. Bailey was committed to the prtoe Court at Wellington for sentence ~ In entering a plea of guilty to all charges, Mr Gifford, who appeared for ttw accused, said that as Bailey had made a. full statement and had admitted all the offences, he' trusted the ftqeeedings would be shortened as much as possible. , . Cedric William White, accountant ft* Humphries and Humphries, soltaiton, Napier, for the last five months, aid that shortly after he commenced duties his suspicions were aroused regarding several ledgers. He im-. mediately made investigations, and as * result found serious defalcations in mafcy accounts. After detailing the Wlous-accounts and transactions from *hieh the charges arose, the witness "id that with embezzlements or other moneys ; not accounted for to Humtnd Humphries, the defalcations "Wed £2lll lis lid. We refunds made by Bailey totalled 13s, leaving a net shortage of *IB7O 18s lid. Mr Gifford, witness stated that had given him every assistance "Clear up the whole matter. Evidence was given by Detectivefcjieant Bickerdike that the accused 95* d at tLa detective office, making a Jj*w»Mnt admitting thefts of money, Property of Humphries and Humof Napier. He was then ar*j™®d and charged with theft, being J5* r * ar ds released on bail.
