(united press association—by electric TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) SYDNEY, July 12. A conference of football representatives from all the States will be held in Sydney shortly to try to amalgamate the Rugby League and Australian Rules codes, with a view to evolving a national game which will embrace the best features of the respective codes, making it possible to hold inter-State annual contests. [Australian Rules football, which originated in Victoria many years agf>, is played by teams of 18, and has many other points of difference, in method of play and in scoring, from both Rugby Union and Rugby League football. Some years before the Great War it was played, to a limited extent, in Christchurch, and also in Wellington, but it did not last long in New Zealand. It is not now played outside of Australia, and even in Queensland it is unknown, while in New South Wales it is below Rugby League, Rugby Union, and Association football in public fayour. Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia are its strongholds, but the Rugby Union game is increasing its hold in both Victoria and South Australia.]
