RUGBY. COLLEGE HOUSE V. SELWYN COLLEGE. In their annual fixture, played yesterday afternoon on the North Hagley grounds, College House, Christchurch, defeated Selwyn College, Dunedin, by 13 points to 3. The game was well contested. The local forwards had a slight advantage in weight, and their backs combined a little better, while the visiting backs showed up more in individual work. The teams were: College House—West-Watson, Rolleston, Andrews (captain), Kirkcaldie, Norris, Doherty, Treloar, Bentley, Walter, Stace, Fieldes, Lane, Hilgendorf, White, and Lysaght. Selwyn College—-Meredith, Milnes, Cropp, Moss, Denham, Talbot (captain), F. L. Clark, L. P. Clark, McDiarmid, O'Kane, Miller, Kimbell, Grace, Cox, and Christie. The Play. After the preliminary hakas, Selwyn kicked off, and mixed play followed, mostly between the halfway and College House twenty-five. After College House had had to force down, play moved toward Selwyn territory till Talbot broke away and passed to Milnes, who carried the ball as far as the House twenty-five. Kirkcaldie replied with a good run down the line, being forced out about 10 yards from the Selwyn line. Play returned to House territory, but a good passing movement sent the ball from Treloar to Doherty to Norris to Andrews, who beat two men and scored beside the posts. Stace converted, giving College House a lead of five points. Shortly afterwards another promising passing movement by the House backs was stopped, and loose play followed, during which Selwyn worked their way up to the House twenty-five, a dangerous spurt by Milnes being stopped by West-Watson. After an exchange of kicks play moved back down the field, and from a loose scramble Rolleston broke through and scored in the corner. Stace's kick fell just short. College House 8, Selwyn College 0. Following the kick-off, House was penalised, but the kick at goal, taken from outside the twenty-five, fell short and play returned to half-way. From a scrum the ball passed along the House line of backs to Kirkcaldie, who was forced into touch at the Selwyn quarter. House again secured from" a scrum, but the movement broke down and Selwyn carried play to the House line, where Treloar gathered from a loose scrum and passed to Doherty, who cleared with a long kick. Selwyn replied with a passing rush and Moss nearly scored, but was brought down at the corner, and House forced. Immediately afterwards Selwyn was awarded a free kick in a handy position, and Cropp put the ball over without trouble. Half-time sounded with College House leading by 8 points to 3. After the interval play worked towards House territory. Cropp put in a good run for Selwyn but was unable to get clear, and Kirkcaldie gained a lot of ground for House before he was solidly tackled. From halfway a College House passing movement broke down and Cropp dribbled through, gathered up the ball, and got clean away, only to be caught by Andrews just in front of the goal. The ball returned to halfway, but House worked play into Selwyn territory. Treloar took a drop-kick at goal from a mark, but was unsuccessful, and shortly afterwards Andrews made an unsuccessful attempt at a potted goal. After some time the Selwyn forwards broke through and took play near the House twenty-five when they were awarded a penalty kick which, however, failed. A period of even play followed. Milnes, the Selwyn three-quarter, retired with an injured knee, and was replaced by de Berry. Play moved Co Selwyn territory, Kirkcaldie being forced out near the corner, and then was sent back to the other end. From well down the field Andrews broke through and was stopped on the Selwyn twenty-five line. The ball was hooked from the loose scrum and sent out to Norris, who put in a good run, cutting through neatly and scoring in the corner. Stace converted with a splendid kick, making the score 13 points to 3 in favour of College House. Time was called shortly aiterwards with play in House territory. Mr K JE. Luttrell was referee.-
