Miss Helen Macmillan Brown (Cashmere Hills) is spending a holiday at Arthur's Pass. Mr and Mrs W. E. Simes (St. Albans) have left for a trip to Raratonga. Miss Roie de Pass, who has been spending a holiday at the Hermitage and Tasman Chalet, is now the guest of Mrs S. M. Raymond, Beverley road, Timaru. Misses Elsie and Lorna Richards (Mitcham) and Miss H. Lochhead (Rakaia) are the guests of Mrs J. M. Wilkie. "Dapplemere," Ashburton, for the hunts. Miss Dorothy Maginness will leave Christchurch to-morrow en route to Sydney, where she will leave by the Orsova for London. Dr. Baker MacLaglan has returned to "Khartoum," Cashmere Hills. ! Mr and Mrs F. M. Scott ("Stencliffe," Pigeon Bay), who are touring South Canterbury and the Lakes districts, arrived in Geraldine yesterday, and are the guests of Mr and Mrs Douglas Lack. Miss M. Downie Stewart has been the guest of honour at several parties given in Dunedin prior to her departure for Canada with her brother, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, M.P., who will represent New Zealand at the conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations at Banff, Canada, from August 14 to August 28. Lady Sidey arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday, and is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. The central committee of the Melanesian Mission gratefully acknowledges a gift of £SO from an anonymous donor. The secretary states that the cheque was very acceptable indeed, and arrived at a most opportune moment. The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) has issued invitations for a civic welcome to be accorded Jonkvrouwe C. M. van Asch van Wyck, world's president of the Young Women's Christian Association, and Miss C. Niven, general secretary, at the City Council Chambers at noon on Friday, July 21. Miss N. Hall, Miss B. Strachan, Mr George Francis, Mr L. E. Owen, and Mr W. H. Fenner (secretary) are members of the committee which is organising the annual staff dance of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., which will be held at Frascati on Friday, July 28. i The annual ball of_ the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers will be held on Tuesday, August 22, in the Caledonian Hall. As a function of this magnitude involves a considerable amount of organising and detail work, a special ball committee has be*en appointed and is working energetically to ensure the success of what may be termed one of the outstanding social events of the season. The president and board of directors of the Young Women's Christian Association have issued invitations for a reception to be held in Jellicoe Hall on Friday afternoon, July 21, in honour of Jonkvrouwe C. M. van Asch van Wvck, world's president of the Young Women's Christian Association, and Miss C. Niven, general secretary. Miss Margaret Baxter is the first Australian woman to be elected a member of the council of t K - " <-••-' Empire Society (states a correspondent). Her knowledge of the Empire is so valuable, and her war work so notable, that in 191!) she was invited to go to France by the education committee of the War Office to help with its scheme of lectures. She was a guest at General Headquarters, visited army bases, and lectured with films and slides in France and Belgium. When in Canada she was elected an honorary member of Lord Roberts's Chapter, an honorary ViceRegent of the Seventeenth Regiment Chapter (London, Ontario) of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire.

Invitations have been issued for a dance to be held by the Amateur Athletic- Clubs at the Frascati on July 27. Mr R. Ryder is honorary secretary of the committee in charge of arrangements. Tickets are also obtainable from Mr L. Poison ("The Press" office), and club secretaries.
