PROFICIENCY TESTS.

ALTERATIONS IN SUBJECTS. A number of changes in the method of conducting the school examinations for proficiency certificates has been decided on by the Education Department for this year. While there will be no special test in handwriting, an extra subject, let-ter-writing, has been added to comnosition. In mental arithmetic 10 minutes will be allowed for 20 exercises, and there will be 10 questions in written arithmetic. The other subjects remain the same in character, but the examinations in history, geography, science, drawing, and handwork will be held before the main proficiency examination. The department has decided also that there will be no accrediting in the tests this year. Inspectors will conduct examinations in the schools, and, as in previous years, will be assisted in making their decisions by the school records of progress and by reports made by the teachers. An examination for candidates at schools which cannot be visited by inspectors will be held on November 30. As it has not been possible to complete arrangements for the "school certificate examination," which was proposed some time ago, no test will be held this year.
