POPPY DAY.

SALE OF THE EMBLEM. DECISION OF R.S.A. EXECUTIVE. A decision to advise collectors for Poppy Day that they may use their own discretion in accepting—in necessitous cases—less than Is for poppies was reached by the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association at its meeting last night, although it emphasised the fact that the charge for poppies was Is each. Members stated that at present there were many people who generally gave more than Is who would be unable to give even this amount. Christchurch people had responded wonderfully to a succession of appeals, and it might be a case of "the last straw." Mr W E. Leadley suggested that a number of paper poppies might be made to meet the case, but after discussion the above decision was agreed upon. The Poppy Day Committee recommended that poppies on miniature crosses be sold and placed m the Cathedral grounds. Mr R. M. Grant said the idea was to have two men in the cathedral grounds selling the poppies on wooden crosses to create extra sales, for soldiers' names could be written on the cross. The emblems would make a wonderful showing if placed in line. He moved that two good salesmen be appointed for the day, and that 1000 crosses be made. Members said that it would be introducing a mournful atmosphere: Poppy Day and Anzac Day were sad enough for some people. It was decided thai no action be taken, and that the committee's report, with the exception of the recommendation, be adopted. The Christchurch Tramway Board wrote enclosing £2 2s as a contribution to Popoy Day. the letter stating that the board left to the discretion of the executive the question as to whether the amount should be spent on a wreath or devoted to the benevolent fund. The secretary reported that pending the executive's decision he had nlaced the money in the benevolent fund. j ,, , It was decided to accept the donation with thanks, and to leave the money in the fund.
