NORTH CANTERBURY.

HANMER SPRINGS. The Volunteer Fire Brigade will send a team to Lyltelton on Easter Saturday to compote in a demonstration. Dr. M. 11. Watt, Director-General of Health, paid a visit of inspection to the Queen Mary Hospital. Harvest thanksgiving services were held in the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. R. T. Bailey conducted the services and Mrs J. Wilson was the organist.

At the monthly meeting of the School Committee there were present: Messrs Farrow (chairman), Hughes, Breckon, Mesdames Malaquin, and J. Glass (hon. secretary). The headmaster reported that the roll number was 44. It was reported that arrangements for a woodwork class. at the school had j been completed, Mr A. Wagner having! volunteered to conduct this class for the boys for two hours each week. Arrangements for a special sewing class had also been completed. The Bible-in-Schools question having been carefully considered, and the headmaster and mistress having expressed approval, a resolution was passed that the local clergy be asked to co-oper-ate, and that half an hour each week be given to Bible study. It was considered desirable to commence at the beginning of the second term and it is expected that the question will be discussed at the annual meeting to be held shortly. At a meeting of members of the Cricket Club Mr H. Roche presided. A programme of work on the domain was arranged for the winter months. Mr J. T. Kibblcwhite was appointed convener of the grounds committee. It was decided that the club would co-operate in the holding of an annual sports meeting as suggested by the Domain Board. Mr J. Manson presided over the monthly meeting of the Golf Club Committee. Three new members were elected and one resignation was accepted. Arrangements were made for tournaments on Easter Monday. Mrs E. Rutherford, who placed the Rutherford block at tne disposal of the club, will be asked to name the new holes. CHEVIOT. Mrs M. Lawry and Mrs C. England were hostesses at a very pleasant ancl successful bridge party held on Friday night, under the auspices of the Cheviot Branch of the Plunket Society. The proceeds will be forwarded to the Karitane Home, Christchurcn. The party was held in the newlyerected Plunket rooms. The prize for the highest aggregate was won by Dr. Irwin, and the prize for the lucky figure was awarded to Mrs W. T. Rutherford. Those present were: Mr and Mrs M. Lawry, Mr and Mrs D. Armstrong, who has for a number of years been a supporter of the Presbyterian Church and a member of the Ladies' Guild, was the guest of honour at a farewell gathering held in the library. On behalf of the members . of the church Mrs Allan presented Miss Armstrong with a tea waggon and a set of crystal jug and glasses. The Rev. Mr and Mrs Taylor expressed the good wishes of those present to their guest. At the conclusion of the Sunday school service Miss Armstrong, who is leaving the Amberley district to reside in New Brighton, was given a bedroom clock as a token of respect and esteem from the teachers and pupils. The presentation was mado by Miss Winifred Chamberlain. CUST. At the annual meeting of the CustWest Eyreton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, Mrs Colin Mcintosh presided. The president said that during the year eight meetings had been held, all of which had been well attended and keen interest taken in the work of the branch. Help had been extended to two families in the district by providing a housekeeper and clothes in a necessitous case. A donation of £3 was made to the community chest, as well as one levy towards the keep of a Flock House boy. A lecture was delivered by Miss Tabart on New Zealand-made goods. Demonstrations were given on raffia work by Miss Kingsbury, cake-icing by Miss Trustrum, box ottomans by Mrs Petrie, rose pruning by Mr Goldsbury, and a lecture by Mr Cussen6 on poultryrearing. Wool quilts made by members had been forwarded to Nurse Maude and the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist Orphanages. The division held a stall at the Canterbury winter show, displaying home-made products, some of which were sold and the proceeds handed over to the provincial executive. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs C. Mcintosh; vicepresidents, Mesdames G. Cowens and G. Way land; secretary and treasurer, Miss Burns; auditor, Mr A. Petrie; committee, Mesdames Leslie, Burns, E. A. Woodfleld, Heinisch, and Miss Smith. Mrs Carpenter cut the birthday cake which had been given by the president. Afternoon tea was served, and Miss Hollow, of Rangiora High School, gave an address on her visit to Ceylon. TAI TAPU. The Methodist Maori Mission party gave a concert programme in the Tai Tapu Hall. The party included representatives of the Maori race from Auckland, Waikato, Otaki, the Chatham Islands, Kaiapoi, and Invercargill. At the conclusion the Rev. N. P. Larscn thanked all who attended and also those who were billeting the visitors. HORNBY. At a meeting of the Chrysanthemum Show Committee Mr Marsden presided. The secretary reported that Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., would attend and open 'the show on May 6. The sub-committee reported that the schedules were available for distribution. The secretary was instructed to write to the Lincoln Horticultural Society for the loan of vases. Many special prizes were promised, notably one from the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, and two rhododendrons from Mr Edgar Stead, of Ham. A church parade of members of the Orange Lodge was held on Sunday evening at St. David's Presbyterian Church, Hornby. Mr N. H. Evans gave an address orr "Forbidden Battlements." Miss F. Mackie presided at the organ. Special hymns were sung. The class conducted by the Workers' Educational Association in the Islington Hall on public speaking was continued on Thursday, when an instructive address on "Pausing and the Art of Gesture" was given by Mr J. W. McGlinchy. The debate, "That it is desirable to purchase New Zealand made goods,", was opened by Mr R. Sinclair, and replied to by Mr F. A. McTiegue, and then adjourned. The remainder of the evening was taken up l with impromptu speaking.

The closing cricket match of the season took place at Takahanga Domain on Saturday afternoon, Macfarlane'.; team playing ShirrefT's team. The result was a draw, Macfarlane's team making 123 runs for six wickets, and Shirreffs eleven 105 for seven wickets. After the match, Mr F. H. Flower (president) presented the trophies won during the season. . The annual meeting of the Rover Basketball Club was held at the Kincaid School grounds. Miss K. Smith occupied the chair. A harvest thanksgiving service was held in the church, the Rev. J. McCaw taking the service. A solo was sung by Mrs Clark. The church was decorated by members of the congregation, the produce later being dispatched to St. Saviour's Orphanage. On Friday evening the scholars from both schools held their annual concert in aid of the school funds. Mr Blomquist, chairman of the school committee, complimented the teachers and Miss Woolcock, the accompanist. Supper was followed by a dance, music being supplied by Mrs Wilson, Misses O and V. Reynish, Mr S. Reynish, and Master Crowther Reynish. Mr Wright was master of ceremonies. A team of tennis players from Little River visited Pigeon Bay, and a tournament resulted in a win for the home team. On Saturday the Little Akaloa team visited the Bay, and won by seven games. DARFIELD. The annual meeting of the Darfield-Kimberley-Greendale sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held in the memorial hall, Mrs H. A. Knight presiding over a good attendance of members. HORORATA. A dance in aid of the Hororata Public Library was held in the Hororata Hall. The music was supplied by Miss H. Maffey and Mr R. Felton. Miss Rewa Barrett played extras and Mr S. Gibson was master of ceremonies. The Selwyn County Council's employees paid a surprise visit to the home of Mr and Mrs E. Butt. Miss Gray presented Mr Butt with a briefbag. Mr Butt acknowledged the gift. At a meeting of the Hororata Returned Soldiers' Association Mr L. A. Parker was in the chair. The balancesheet, showing a credit of ,£2 15s lOd, was adopted. The secretary was instructed to write to the Returned Soldiers' Association, Christchurch, for 100 service forms for the Anzac service. To mark the opening of the football season, the Hororata team journeyetl to Glentunnel on Saturday, and had a friendly game with the Glentunnel team. PREBBLETON. Electric light has recently been installed in the domain pavilion by the Domain Board. A concert was given in the hall in aid of the public school funds, when the programme was provided by Mr P. L. Davies, who presented a variety of elocutionary items. There was a good attendance at the dance held in the Public Hall in aid of the Prebbleton School funds. The music was played by the Broadway orchestra, extras being played by Miss Joyce Kolkman. The master of ceremonies was Mr J. Smith. The weekly competitions were won by Mrs L. Harris, Mrs J. Easterbrook, Mr A. Banks, and Mr A. Wood. The prizes were given by Mr C. Atkinson. Playing Rugby football at Marshland on Saturday, a team from Prebbleton was defeated by 23 points to three. Mr H. Prebble was the referee. LADBROOKS. At a meeting of the Hall Committee, Mr F. Meyer presided over a good attendance of members. It was decided to start the weekly socials this week. A friendly game was played between the Halswell and Ladbrooks basketball teams on the Halswell Domain £!round on Saturday. After a keenlycontested game the Halswell team won by 12 points to eight. TEMPLETON. An afternoon coin party was held at the home of Mr and Mrs A. Simpson, Queen street, in aid of St. Saviour's Church funds. Competitions were won by Mrs Wright and Mrs C. Voice.
