CHRISTCHURCH MILESTONES.
TO TEE HDITO* OT TIIJ6 PBSSS. Sir, —A correspondent in your columns on Saturday asks if any reader knows of any other milestones similar to the one he draws attention to on Riccarton road. There is one on Hills road, Mairehau, on the edge of the footpath in line with Shirley road from Westminster street, but although passing it scores of times I have never made a close inspection of it to say whether it is a milestone or a boundary stone. Judging the distance out from town, I took it to be the former. There are milestones buried up on the North road. Some years ago, when on that road daily, I saw two that had been exposed by the Waimairi County Council's grader on the west side between Daniel's and Radcliffe roads. I cannot now give the position of what would be the fourth milestone, which is not far from Daniel's road, but if my memory has not failed me the fifth is between the last two telegraph posts on the town side of Radcliffe road, about two feet from the cycle track. I have an idea that the third milestone was somewhere in the vicinity of Church's, as in the "good old days" the Sawyer's Arms was beyond the three mile limit. A remeasuring would most likely determine where these stones are.— Yours, etc.. RAITCHJAY. April 10. 1933.
