RACING AND TROTTING

LATEST NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR

TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Acceptances for the Hawera Trotting Club's annual meeting will close today at 8.30 p.m. Acceptances for the Easter meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will close at noon today. The date of nominations for the winter meeting of the Forbury Park Club has been extended to April 20. Country Trained. Among the nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting, to be held on Saturday of next week, is that of Gay Fashion, who showed good form at the recent Cheviot meeting, where in the Cup he ran third to Chenwood and Desert Maiden. Gay Fashion has not been much raced, and he has won, but trained in the Cheviot district as he has been, and not travelling very far afield, his opportunities have been limited. If raced more about Canterbury there is little doubt that he would soon annex another winning stake. Fancies for Saturday. During the past few days Some Guy has come much more into favour for the Fendalton Handicap, the mile saddle race to be decided on Saturday. Others favoured among the early selections are Great Chenault and Editor. It is likely that the lastnamed will be ridden by M. B. Edwards. Sunny Morn and Colorado still retain their favour and promise to be at the head of quotations in Saturday's principal event, the Easter Handicap. Filly by Ahuriri. There is a two-year-old filly by Ahuriri from Queen Betty in work at Epsom under the charge of A. Patten, which is regarded as a very likely sort. When first placed in commission she did not boast much size, but has since developed into a more robust type. Queen Betty is by Four Chimes from Dot Robbins, so there is a strong infusion of the Abbey Bells blood in the Epsom juvenile. Prizes to Same Horses. The four trotting events at the Westport meeting, held on Saturday and yesterday, were won by two horses, Marvin Bingen taking the mile race both days, while Queen Author secured similar honours in the mile and a half events. Good Report on Red Hope. According to northern reports the Great Hope—Jenny Lind, Jun., three-year-old Red Hope is shaping like an early winner. When raced at the Thames meeting a little more than a week ago he was carrying a good deal of superfluous condition and was not ready to show his best. Red Hope is owned by the Whangarei sportsman, Mr E. J. Parkes, and is trained by L. McMahon, who won two Auckland Cups with Gold Jacket, also raced by Mr Parkes. Aspirant to Classic Honours. J. Bryce's two-year-old colt Ringamata, by Ahuriri from Our Aggie, dam of Red Shadow, is due to make his first public appearance at the Ashburton meeting next week. His showing there will be watched with great interest, as in many quarters he is regarded as a serious claimant to honours in the two-year-old classic, the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, to be decided on the same course in June, In Good Form. Although Harvest Child has to do more work than most horses at Addington, the eight-year-old gelding appears to be performing his track tasks with much more vigour than for some time past. He has always been a good track worker, but has not on all occasions reproduced in his races the form of which he is capable. Sale of Trotting Stock. On next Monday night, at Tattersail's Horse Bazaar, Cashel street, there will be a sale of Mr J. M. Samson's trotting stock. The draft, which comprises eight lots, includes the promising three-year-old trotting filly Chiming Wrack, by Wrack from Edith Chimes, who has been several times in the money recently, and Bingen Wrack, who at her first start ran second to Desert Maiden over a mile and a quarter at Wellington in 2mih 49 2-ssec. She is a four-year-old, by Wrack from Alpha Bingen. Others to go under the hammer are a two-year-old unbroken sister to Bingen Wrack; a two-year-old brother to Chiming Wrack, a trotter; a yearling colt; a three-year-old trotting pony, by Wrack from Alpha Bingen; and the brood mares Alpha Bingen, by Nelson Bingen—Alpha H., by California; and Edith Chimes, by Four Chimes from Edith A., by Black Ribbon. Alpha Bingen was served by Travis Axworthy on January 16 and Edith Chimes by the same horse on December 28.

TURF GOSSIP. Reminders. Nominations for the Reefton Jockey Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. tomorrow. Acceptances for the Kumara Racing Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Easter Programmes. The Easter racing opens next Saturday with meetings at Ellerslie. Tauherenikau, Feilding, Hastings, Riverton, and Beaumont. On the following Monday there will in addition be racing at Riccarton, Waipukurau, and Kumara. The Hawke's Bay meeting, a new departure by the club, is a one-day fixture only, but a second autumn meeting will be held the following Saturday. Not a Starter. Refresher was scratched at 2.24 p.m. yesterday for all engagements at Ellerslie. Southland Visitors. On Friday morning, at Invercargill, Ruling Light, who is due to compete at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Easter meeting, was sent over a mile and a quarter, with Strong Light as pacemaker for eight furlongs under a feather-weight. Ruling Light ran the first six furlongs in lmin 19 3-5 sec and the full distance in 2min 21 2-ssec, and finished fairly well in second berth. This pair will arrive at Riccarton to-day. England's Champion. The official scratching of Orwell, who won all but one of his six engagements as a two-year-old, in the remainder of his three-year-old engagements was announced in the second week in February, and this probably means that he will not be racing again in England. A Stable Trio. Monastic, a winner at Westport yesterday, is an acceptor for the Kildare High-Weight and Courtenay Handicaps at Riccarton on Monday next, but as his stable-mate Taku Tama is also in the former event, he will probably be reserved for the seven furlong race. Monastic has actuaUy never fulfilled his early promise and yesterday's was his first win for some time. Now that he has struck form again he may do,well during the Easter holidays. Argentic, in the same ownership as Monastic, was beaten in moderate company on both days at Westport, but he was in need of racing and better results can be expected from him next •week. He, too, is doubly engaged on Monday. Gold' Trail; Gold Trail is to go to Ellerslie in good order, and will contest the Easter Handicap on Saturday and the St Leger Stakes on Monday. On Saturday last, at Hastings, she was associated with White Fang and Shrewd in a once round gallop, and with the best of the weights was always in front, and beat White Fang comfortably in lmin 41Jsec. Treatment to her throat has got rid of the trouble which has affected Gold Trail for some time, and $t was after this gallop that her trip to Ellerslie was decided upon. Riding in England. B. Rosen, who returned to England from India in company with B. Carslake, will again be associated with G. Duller's stable when he rides there. Last year he won the Ascot Royal Hunt Cup on. Totaig, one of Duller's team. On his return from Portugal last month S. Donoghue said he was in better health than for the last ten years, and was very hopeful of showing particularly good riding form this season. Randwick's Anniversary. Although April 17, Sydney Cup day, is the one hundredth anniversary of the first day's racing held on the present site of the Randwick racecourse, it was not the venue of the first big meetings (says the Sydney "Referee"). In the first fifty years' racing in New South Wales leading metropolitan race meetings were held on six different tracks. The first was at Hyde Park, another near Bellview, on the South Head road. The third site was in the vicinity of Gorse Farm. From that point a move was made to Paramatta, then to the Sandy Track on the old Botany road, and later to Homebush, the scene of important meetings for many years.

RIVERTON R.C. Following are the handicaps for the Eiverton meeting:— Waiau Steeplechase—Pinion 10-2. Great Western Steeplechase—French Fleet 10-1. Visitors' Hack Handicap—Slaemish 8-7; Irish Birdcatcher 8-4; Great Shot 8-2: Clara Bow 7-13; Fair Vision 7-10. Pourakino Handicap—Royal Duke 8-11.
