NORTH CANTERBURY.

KAIKOURA. Rain sot in on Friday evening and there was a heavy downpour about 7.30 o'clock on Saturday morning. Pot weather had been experienced for weeks before the rain. A dance was held at the Lynton Downs schoolroom on Friday evening in aid of the school funds. There was a good attendance. Miss V.. Lawson and Mr G. Ellis were the winners of the lucky spot waltz. Music was supplied by the Misses E. and M. Warelmm, and extras were played by Misses Mary Mackle and Templeman. Mr A. Weavers was M.C. A meeting of the Kaikoura branch of tlio War Relief Association was held on Friday afternoon. Present were: Messrs J. Boyd (presiding), J. Davidson, A. B. Clark, J. J. Harnett, and A. Gooch (secretary). The secretary read a list showing the amounts paid out to each returned man from the funds, and also gave a summary of receipts and expenditure. Recently a letter was received from the Audit Department. notifying that payments could only be made to returned men in necessitous circumstances. Of the total amount dealt with bv the Association. only £4of> Ms Bcl has been absorbed for administration purposes, and of this sum £304 17s 3d was interest on overdraft, brought about by the Association having to draw on the fixed deposit account to meet urgent cases of relief. For the period the Association has been in existence the expenditure has totalled £406 14s Bd, and the receipts £6740 8s 4d. The balance of the receipts, with 'the exception nf £240 in the bank, has been paid out to applicants lor relief.

CHEVIOT. A meeting of the committee of the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in the public library last week, the senior vicepresident, Mr A. M. Hyde, presiding over a fair attendance. The fees for stands fit the annual show were arranged as follows: Advertisement and demonstration stands 10s 6d, games 01 skill £1 Is, fees payable in advance. The sub-committee appointed to deal with the salaries of the secretary and treasurer recommended that these officers be paid a minimum amount of £3O for their services. The recommendation was adopted. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr D. O'Connor in liis recent bereavement, and the secretary was instructed to write conveying the sympthy of the Association. Winskill were appointed to take charge of the produce shed. The date for the committee meeting was arranged for Mondav. February 27. Entries for the forthcoming show close on February 2i.

LOBURN. The mdn Lilly meeting of the Loburn fruit growers was held in the Coronation Hall last week. Mr Macleod presiding. Mr Carolin, Federation secretary, was present. Members reported that picking for export would begin this week, "Worcester permain" being the-first variety ready, and the next being Cox's orange, which would be ready about the last week in February. Excellent crons of apples are reported, and the frequent showers during the summer have had the effect of filling the fruit out. . Harvest is well forward, practically all the wheat now being in stook. The handling of many of the crops is more difficult this year owing to the length of the straw, but the prevalence of rust will diminish the yield considerably. . . Mr H. Bennett is at present a patient in the Christchurch Hospital. M: T. Joyce has returned home after an absence of nine months. He attended the Eucharistic Congress, and has since travelled through the British Isles and the Continent, where he accompanied his uncle. Bishop Byrne, or Toowoomba, Australia. < Mrs L. B. Ellis, of Dunedin, a former resident, paid a short visit to the district. She was the gnest of Mrs G. T. Croft. ISLINGTON. The annual public meeting of the Islington Welfare Committee was held at the Islington Social Hall last week. Mr J. Leslie presided over a very large attendance of residents. The balance-sheet was read, and showed a loss of £2l 8s 4d on the year's operations. It was received and adopted. The followinc officers were elected Mrs P. H Thomson, Messrs H. R, Parker, V. O. Parker T. Oldfield. J. Burt. E. Pearce. and W. H. Richardson, who, with the assistance of the representatives of the New Zealand Refrigerating CompanyMessrs J. Leslie (chairman), J. «• T>nw. F. Downs, P. Crequer, and "■ Wilson (secretary"), will form the committee for the ensuinsr year. SHEFFIELD. A meeting .of the committee of the newly-formed Sheffield Public Library was held last week. Mr J. H. Jebson presiding over a full attendance of members. A report 011 the canvass of the district showed that 63 residents propose to become subscribers. The chairman reported having been informed tnat there would be no difficulty in obtaining the money held in trust by the Malvern County Council for library purposes in Sheffield.
