NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

TIDES. It will be high tide on the beach to-day at 11.31 a.m. and 11.59 p.m., and in the river at 11.57 a.m. and 12.21 p.m. To-morrow, on the beach at 12.4 a.m. and 12.18 p.m., and in the river «t 12.30 a.m. and 12.41 p.m. The water on the beaches has been ideal for bathing and full advantage or' the weather has been taken. The flood water from the Waimakariri, although quite noticablo from the shore on Friday morning, quickly disappeared, and "herrings were caught from the pier in huge numbers. Fire Brigade. The Superintendent of the Fire Brigade (Mr W. 11. Stokes) has boon granted leave of absence from February 12 to 2S, and Mr J. F- Stokes, the Dcputy-SuperiHtoiidciit, will act as Chief of 'the Brigade during his obsenec. Bowls. The club championships are now reach - iug an interesting stage, as Skips Besley, Middlcton, and Muirson each have one life in the rinks. Besley plays Muirson this afternoon, and Middlcton plays the winner. In the doubles, Bisman with two lives, L. Lawrence and Holloway, each with one life, will fight out the issue. In the singles, Besley and Glasgow have each two lives and L. Lawrence, T. Matson, and Holloway have one. The games played this week arc as follows: —- In the rinks—Middlcton, brat Dean; in the doubles—Carmalt and 11. A. Bishop beat Evans and Pattrick: Watm)u and 'L. Lawrence beat, Carmalt and H. A. Bishop; Henry ;im\ Holloway beat Malson and J. Stokes. In the singles— Mcßurney beat Hudson; Matson beat T. Robins. In tin- handicap singles—.lacobson beat Cuff; Skiuworth beat Taylor; J. Stokes beat Watts; Besley beat H. A. Bishop; Mnpstone bent Fair. Methodist Church. The New Brighton Methodist Choir, which has been in recess, reopened ils practices on Thursday evening under the leadership of Mr Mead. Members of the Young Men's Bible Class have been camping at Governor's Bay for some weeks. Last Saturday afternoon was visitors' day, and a number of friends from yew Brighton were entertained. Eatcs. Up to last evening the Council's staff was not unduly harrassed by ratepayers desirous of paying rates, on which a ten per cent, penalty will automatically be added on February 11. Leaver) has been indisposed since Monday last, and was unable to be present at the public meeting held in the Council Chambers on Thursday with reference to the holding of a gala in aid of his relief fund. Girl Guides. The guides resumed their weekly meetings last evening after a six weeks' break from their usual routine, during which time a camp was held at " A umoe.''

NORTH BEACH. Life-Saving. There is evidence of increased interest in life-saving work among the junior members of the North Bea.ch Surf Club. Regular run-outs with the roel were made- last week-end and on Wednesday evening, ao that the club has a thoroughly efficient team, apart from the competition team, ready in case of emergency. Great interest was shown by the public on the beach in the life-saving work done by the North Beach scouts on Wednesday evening. The troop wus divided into three teams and although no long swinis were expected, the boys did the work exceptionally well, and were very keen. A further practice witli the scouts will bo held this afternoon, if weather permits. North Beach School. The school opened on Wednesday with the roll practically unchanged although the new entrants were less in number than usual. Pending the arrival of the new headmaster, Mr V. Colville, Mr E. Diehl is acting headmaster. Miss 0. Curtis has taken up her duties an infant mistress in place of Miss O. French. Mr C. Martin is acting as relieving master. Waimairi Surf Club. The Waimairi Surf Life-Saving (Jlub proposes to hold the annual club competitions on the beach to-morrow afternoon if weather permits. The chief event is the Itoyda Cup competition, a three-man rescue, which will take place at 2 o'clock. Eight teams are competing in this event. Following on the Royds Cup competition will be a scries of events on the beach.
