PREVENTION OF OVERLAPPING.
ASSISTANCE FOR THE POOR. RELIEF COMMITTEE'S SCHEME.
A scheme by which it is hoped to achieve closer co-operation and avoid confusion and overlapping was mentioned at last night's meeting of the committee of the Citizens' Relief Association by the chairman, Mr George Harper. Others present were Miss Bromley Cocks, Adjutant V. "Wood, the Revs. P. Re veil, F. Rule, L. McMaster, Messrs W. W. Scarff, J. K. Archer, V. French, J. W. Crampton, and F. W. J. Belton. The chairman said that draft regulations had been drawn up and submitted to the director. Various other bodies working on the same lines could be represented on the committee and i-o-operation could thus be made closer than it had been. Overlapping would be minimised, if not done away with. The work would be carried oat under the same constitution as at present. During the coming year the community would need the Association's assistance more than ever, he added. / It was decided that the various depots/ in the City should open on one particular day a week for a fortnight as an experiment to see whether the system would avoid overlapping and th 4 issue of double quantities to indiwlual applicants for relief. Director's Eeport. The director (Mr J. W. Woodbury) reported that for Christmas week increased supplies were issued to depots and the central depot was closed for a fortnight. The Rotary Club's hampers were of assistance. The depot opened t f again on January 4, and was very bus?./ The depots, which it was intended to . close for the month, had to be reopened to relieve the position."T l three days, January 4 to January 7, there were 880 applications for relief, and for the week ending January 14 1288, an increase of 148 on the week ending January 16 last year. There was a balance of £B2 15s 5d whieh would cover only one week's parchases. Gifts last week totalled £lB 9s lOd, an increase of £6 6s 3d on the previous week.
