SHORTHAND EXAMINATIONS Nancy Kaplev and - v ° ra Kelliber, both pupils of tlie Sacred Heart High School, Ashburton, have received advice that thev liave been awarded B certificates "in Pitman's shorthand exam- . inations. The certificates are awarded I for not less than 100 words a minute. Labour Market. During the past week or so there has been an improved demand for experienced ploughmen, and wages which are an increase on those in existence for some time, are offering. In addition harvest bonuses ranging from £7 to £l2 are being arranged where ploughmen are expected to I«ke part in the hawest operations. Cricket Match Abandoned. Owing to the fact that there are not sufficient players available from Ashburton, the annual representative match between the West Coast and Ashburton Cricket Associations, which was set down to be played at Greymouth on Januarv 2nd and 3rd, has been abandoned. s Postal Business Increases. An increase in the business for the Christmas season was noticeable in all departments of the Ashburton Post Office yesterday. The volume of business is equal to that of last year, the interchange of Christmas presents and greeting cards resulting in an increase in the inward and outward mails. Extra letter-carriers will be engaged to-mor-row and on Saturday. The money-order officers were engaged yesterday with pensions which are being paid out earlier this month on account of the holidays. St. Andrew's Church. . A meeting of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church congregation was held last evening to consider the call of the Rev. A. G. Irvine to Hawera. A resolution was carried unanimously tV> the effect that the congregation record sincere and grateful appreciation of Mr Irvine's services to the church, especially his remarkably outstanding interest "in the youth of the church. While they assured him of their continued loyal support if he decided to remain in Ashburton, they desired to place no obstacle in the way of his accepting the call. MAYFIELD. The annual break-up of the Maylield School took the form ot a children's fancy dress party, which was held in the Band Hall. The annual Sunday School and congregational picnic of the Lauriston Presbyterian Church was held on Mondav at Hakatere. A large number ol parents, scholars, and friends attended. A sports programme was held for the children, and several games were played. The Rev. A. S. Morrison presented the prizes, each .scholar receiving a book. Mr Morrison spoke ol tho excellent services given bv the superintendent. Mr I). Smith, and the women teachers, Miss M. Lotham ami Miss A. Farquhar. Mr Smith returned thanks, stating that the Sunday School was making definite progress.
