For the track meeting to be held on the Ashburton racecourse on Saturday afternoon, January 14th, by the Ashburton Motor-cycle Club, in conjunction with the Pioneer Sports Club, the following programme has been provided:— Seaview open handicap of four laps (£7), Ashburton open handicap of five laps (£9), South Island middle-weight j championship of six laps (£l3), Pioneer i open handicap of five laps (£9), consolation handicap of three laps (£4 10s). Entries for all events close at 9.30 p.m. on Thursday, January 6th, at the office of tho Pioneer Sports Club. Tho course, which is in every sense good, is a mile and a quarter round, with easy bends, and ample width. On Monday evening next the remodelled race track at English Park is to be opened with a cycle race meeting. Motor-cyclists havo been invited to join in tho procession,, which will be , made to the Park on tho occasion of i the opening of the track. , They are asked to assemble at Latimer square at 6.30 next Monday evening. The track, which it is expected will be completed to-morrow, has been rebuilt and banked sufficiently for motor racing. It is hlpecPto provide several motor events for an evening meeting to be held there to-morrow week. At the grass track meeting held at Hamilton last Saturday there were 48 different riders competing. During the afternoon slight showers of rain fell, j making the course somewhat slippery, i in consequence of which there were several spills. Owing to the large num- j ber of riders competing many heats had to be run, the last race being one and j a half hours behind schedule time. The | meeting was the most successful yet i held there. The New Zealand light-weight championship was won by J. Fenton on a 2} "Velocette. He also won the novice handicap. This was his second appearance on a race track. The fastest time put up during the meeting was that of Ben Bray on a 2$ Velocette, whose speed was just on 70 miles per hour. The Programme Committee of the Pioneer Sports Club will meet next Tuesday evening to draw up* the programme for the second half-year.
