LATEST NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR

An Evergreen Galloper. Shrewd, who won the principal handicap on the second day at "Woodvillo, lasts well, as he was foaled in 1924, and he is the last of the King Marks now racing or showing any form. He should be a light-weight t. possibility in the Manawatu Cup if a suitable rider can be procured. Australian Sire Dead. Legionnaire, who was imported by the Kia Ora studmaster, Mr P. Miller, died on November 30th at Messrs Harris Bros.'s stud, Holbrook. Legionnaire was one of the best two-year-olds of his year in England, and was a son of Phalaris from Speean Bridge, by Spearmint. Included in his progeny were such good winners as Legislator. First Legion, Calina, Yeridique, Questionnaire, and Frontier. Mishap While Schooling,. ' ■. T. Tuclteiy.! the former New Zealand; rider, who has done -Well in the saddle since his arrival in Melbourne, received | a broken collar-bone-when Manlius fell with him at -Mentone on December 3rd. Hurdler for Ellerslie. Captain's Gift is to be sent to Auckland to fulfil hurdles engagements at the Summer Meeting at Ellerslie. Last season this horse performed well over the battens, winning at Wellington, Biccarton, and Dunedin. . In a dozen starts he Avas successful on' six occasions and was four times second. This season he ran'second to Memfco in the Grand National Hurdle Eaco with lOst 61b, third wilh 12st 31b at Geraldine, won tho Spring Hurdles, one mile and a half, with list lib at Dunedin, and was just beaten on the second day of tho same Meeting by Antrim Boy when carrying 12st. Not Bealised. La Poupee was a good two-year-old, but her subsequent form has been disappointing. She showed a glimpse of ability at Woodville, but has npt trained on as might have been expected. She has always .gone well * on soft tracks,, and it was on such going at Trentham that she gave signs-of coming right a few months ago. English Biding School. Captain F. C. Hitchcock is starting a riding school for apprentices at Lewes, England. A number of trainers will send him lads for a term's ti}ition. i It. is suggested that the lads' course of instruction should bo approximately six weeks. They will be taught how I to ride with a good firm seat and good | hands, how to handle a nervous or fractious young horse, points to note in exercising and riding gallops, stable duties, and lectures on general subjects. At the end of the first fortnight a report will be sent to tho trainer of tho lad's progress. This seems to bo an admirable idea, and it may save trainers the trouble of being encumbered with lads hot suitable to be apprenticed before the indentures are signed. Improving Form., Supported a few times since he came to Melbourne from Sydney some months ago, My Talisman ran his best race in the December Mile at Epsom on December ferd, says a Melbourne paper. My Talisman, fairly well supported, appeared to have the race y>on at the j half-distance, but Karomln, thjß consis- | tent country performer, finished fast on the outside and won by a head. Both Karomin and My Talisman showed considerable improvement in their running in the Fund Handicap at the Valley the previous Saturday, when both "finished well out of a place, My Talisman just in front of Ivaromin. TROTTING NOTES. Beminders. Nominations for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Summer Meeting will close at. 12 noon to-day. Acceptances for the Westport. Trotting Club's Summer Meeting will close it 9 p.m. to morrow. Acceptances for the Gore Trotting Club's Annual Meeting (5 p.m.), Wairarapa Trotting Club's Annual Meeting (8 p.m.), and the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting (5 p.m.) will close to-morrow. Acceptances for tho Ashburton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting will closo on Monday. Answer to Correspondent. "Digger"—(3) Should have read December 9th, 1932. By Native Prince. A recent winner iu Sydney was Son of Native, a five-year-old gelding by the New Zealand stallion Native Prince from Hella. Like Native Prince did while in Australia, his representative races as an unhoppled pacer. Handicap Be vie wed. Of the five horses handicapped on tho front of tho Ashburton Cup none can make greater appeal than Gold Country, who has been racing most consistently this spring, and' ho is at. the top of his form at present. His strongest opponent on tho samo mark would appear to be Colorado, but he is also engaged in the Auckland Cup, and it is probable that he #ill contest tho latter event, Lindbergh did not show up in his New Brighton race last Saturday, but a repetition of his effort on the concluding day of the Cup fixture Avould find him a strong contender. On the same mark is Begal Voyage, but her performance in the New Zealand Cup, I her only start at Addington, was not very she will havo to | show great improvement to dispute mati ters in this event. Free Advice performed poorly in all her recent races, but she put up a fine performance on the Ashburton track when she ran second to Satin King in the Gold Cup. At her best she would have to bo considered. 80110 cannot bo recommended on late form and Bed Shadow will not start. Terence Dillon is set a difficult proposition from 36yds, and lie' appears to be held quite safe by Boil' Or. -who meets Harold Logan on the same terms as in the New Zealand Cup, in which Boi l'Or finished third, three and a half lengths behind the winner, Harold Logan. On that performance Harold Logan should finish in front of his Free-for-All victor. Early selections for the race are Gold Country, Lindbergh, and Harold Logan. Begaining Form. Mountain Dell, an Auckland Cup candidate, has been demonstrating in her recent track work at Epsom that she is regaining her best form after an absence of about 18 months from the winning list. In the 1930-31 season Mountain Dell won fivo races, and she gave great promise in those efforts. Howover, she failed to train on, and has experienced a lapse of form since. She ! is a maro when at lier best, and it is pleasing to see that she is once again showing promise on the tracks. She is handicapped on 48 yards in the Auckland Cup.

Westport T.C. For tlic "Westport Trotting Club's Midsummer Mooting, which .is to be held oil December Utitk and 27th, acceptances ±'or the first day's events will close with the secretary, Mr F. Clark, telephone 150, at 9 p.m. to-morrow. The club has arranged i'or a special horso train from Christchurch to Inangahua Junction and' return, and for a lorry to meet the train and transport all gear free of charge from Inangahua to Westport and return after the races. Provision will be made for motor transport of horses from luangahua Junction to "Westport if required. As compared with previous years, acceptance fees have been reduced and none of the events will be decided over odd distances. Together with the stake for the President's Handicap, a race for unhoppled trotters on the first day, goes a cabinet of cutlery presented by Messrs James Buchanan and Co. The dates of the Meeting have been so arranged that owners will bo enabled to go right through the West Coast circuit in easystages, commencing from Westport. Tho club has met with liberal support from Canterbury trainers in the matter of nominations, and there is not likely to bo any material falling off when acceptances fall duo to-morrow. j Spelling. J. S. £'luv\v:hus decided give. Oay -Paree a good spell and he will be missing from the holiday Meetings. Gay Paree showed very promising form in the autumn, when it was considered ho would attain high honours among the trotting division, but he has disappointed in his races during tho past two or three months. Tho spell from tho track should benefit him. Derby Candidates. The Great Northern Derby contenders Indianapolis and Taxpayer figure on the front of tho handicap _ for the Grandstand Handicap, a 3min 27sec class mile and a half race on the opening day of the Auckland Meeting. In this race Tax-payer is on his correct assessment, but Indianapolis is giving away one second to start. Excellent Response. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club has received excellent acceptances for the trotting events on its programme for 1 Saturday's Meeting, there being only eight defections in the Duvaueliellc . Handicap and fivo in the Littlo River Handicap. This leaves fields of 34 and 21 respectively. Tor those events Mr W. Dingwall will'-operate his starting barrier. BANKS PENINSULA R.C. ACCEPTANCES.
