BREACH OF CONTRACT.

In the Supreme Court, Donald •L'hu O'Connor, an Auckland man, sued John Brownlee, an operatic singer, I*3 recover £514 12s damages for alleged breach of contract. Plaintiff claimed that this amount covered liis engagement as defendant's manager for a concert tour of Australia and New Zealand, and also tor money outstanding. Defendant denied the contract, and also its breach. He alleged failure by plaintiff to furnish proper accounts. The jury found for plaintiff, and awarded £174 12s damages. NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT. CLAUSE PASSED IN UPPER HOUSE SYDNEY, December 14. After two more defeats in the Upper House on the Moratorium Bill, the Government passed the vital guarantor clause, the cause of last week's setback, without division. The clauses defeated last week were reinstated. [Following several defeats in the Upper House, Cabinet last Thursday adjourned the sitting of the Upper House till Tuesday in order that Ministers in the meantime might have an opportunity to formulate their plans.] GRASSLAND FIRES. SERIOUS OUTBREAK IN NEW SOUTH WALES. SYDNEY, December 14. ' Fires have destroyed over 30,000 acres of grassland in the Eiverina district. A serious outbreak near Oaklands swept 17,000 acres, destroyed large numbers of sheep, razed fencing, and cut oft homesteads before it was subdued by 200 fire-fighters. Spreading to the zailway line, the fire ignited the sleepers and forced the train from Urana to Oaklande to turn back. Smaller outbreaks occurred at other centres, and sheep and cattle perished in the flames.

NEW ZEALANDER INJURED. COLLISION IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Decern bar 14. William Lamberton, aged 21, ot Canterbury, New Zealand, a competitor in the dirt track races here, was seriously injured in a collision between his bicycle and a motor lorry at Petersham. Lamberton suffered a broken nose, an injured eye, and probably a fracture of the 6kull. QUEENSLAND ASSEMBLY OUTRAGE. MEMBER STRUCK IN THE FACE. BRISBANE, December 14. A member of the Assembly assaulted another wliilo the House was in session, this being the first incident of the kind in the historj of the Queensland Parliament. While the House was in committee Mr E. Llewellyn (Labour) said that Mr E. Maher (Country Party) had a filthy mind. Mr Maher walked across Chamber and struck Mr Llewellyn in tfyj face. Mr Maher was suspended for the remainder of the session. Later the Premier (Mr W. Forgan Smith) rrrtived that Mr Maher be summoned to at-* tend at the Bar of the House to answer a charge "of having assaulted Mr Llewellyn. This was agreed to. SHEET GLASS IMPORTS. Colville (Secretary to the Department of Overseas Trade), answering a question, said that tho Government had been giving attention to the prohibition of the importation of sheet glass into Australia since the conclusion of tho Anglo-Australian agreement at Ottawa.
