VAULT FOR RECORDS.
UTILITIES COMMITTEE'S PROPOSAL. A proposal of the Public Utilities Committee that a vault should be erected to store the records or public bodies was before yesterday's meeting of the Waimakariri River Trust, which, after the position had been explained by its Resident Engineer (Mr H. W. Harris) decided to take no action. Tho letter setting out the proposal was from the office of tho City Surveyor, and it stated that the By-laws Commit ee of the City Council viewed it favourably, and had recommended the Public Utilities Committee to communicate with the local bodies concerned so that, in the event of favourable decisions being received, the project could be proceeded with, the actual site, however, to be a matter for further consideration. The total cost of the vault would be about £IBO, and the site considered was in Latimer Square, and of the amount mentioned it was thought that the City Council should contribute £45, the Drainage Board £3G and the Gas Company £36, leaving the- sum of £G3 to be obtained frojji other sources. It was thought "that tho space to be made available in the vault should be dependout upon the amount of contribution of each respective authority concerned. Regarding the records, the By-laws Committee of the City Council was of the opinion that each of the bodies affected should prepare its own duplicate plans, documents, etc. for storage in the vault, as it did not approve of the fcupgestion that the Council's own stafi' should undertake this work l'or other authorities. The- Resident Engineor (Mr H. W. Harris) said that tho space required for storage of any of the Trust's permanent records would be gmall as against that required by any other body mentioned. The main expense entailed, should the Trust decide: to take advantage of the proposal, would be in the preparation uf duplicate records.
