ESPLANADE PLANTING

Twenty-five macrocarpa trees', representing n. portion of the scheme of planting to bo carried nut between Euston street aml Scarborough, were planted on Thursday. The tree.-, which arc in excellent condition, have been planted inside neatly painted oil drums. A considerable depth of some of the best soil procurable ivas placed inside the drums, and in view of this fact, and that adequate provision has been made for protection from the winds, the plants should make Rood progress. The date for the planting of the Norfolk Island pines has not been definitely decided, and will depend entirely on the weather. It is not intended to tal<e any risks and the trees will lie planted under expert supervision. Redclilfs School Improvements. The work of improving the grounds of the Redcliffs School is proceeding apace. The limit of the hockey ground, which will result from the scheme of improvement, is to be defined on the main road side of the big macrocarpa tree [ by a .small bank about It! inches high. The path which now crosses this aroa diagonally from the turnstile, will be formed round the side of the ground; and will then turn towards the schoolat a point, clear of the hockey ground. Concert at Redcliffs. 'l'llc Redcliffs Community Hall was pricked on Thursday evening, when the children of the RcdclilTs School gave a concert in aid of the ground improvement fynd. During the evening the opportunity was taken of saying farewell to Miss Johnston (headmistress) and Mr Parsonage (assistant master), who arc leaving to take up duties elsewhere. Oldridge) referred to the good relations existing l.itween the staff and the committee. Reference to the loss sustained by uio school in the departure of Miss Johnston and Mr Parsonage was also made by the headmaster (Mr C. F. Pratt). Rugby Football. By winning its last match, the Sumner Club's fifth grade side were declared the winners of the B section. To-day the third grade team plays the iiral game of the second round, when it meets Merivale at St. Leonard's square. As Merivale are runners-tip to Sumner in the competition, an 'even game is anticipated.
