BRITAIN TO SPEND £20,000,000. EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME. CRUISERS, DESTROYERS, AND SUBMARINES. (UNITED rIIBSS ASSOCIATION— BY ELECTRIO TELEORAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (Received August 10th, S.lO p.m.) LONDON, August 10. Tho naval expert of the "Daily Telegraph," amplifying his messago on July 22nd, when he reported that orders for 22 now ships, under the British Navy's 1931 programme of construction, might be placed at any moment, says that, between now and March contracts are being placed which normally would bo spread over two years. These concern the programmes for 1931 and 1932, the 1931 programme haviDg been held back for 18 months. A conservative estimate of the total expenditure on construction is £20,000,000, all but a negligible fraction going to British labour and materials. Tho programmes include: — Four 7000-ton Leander cruisers. Two 5500-ton Arethusa cruisers. Two flotilla leaders. Sixteen destroyers. Eight sloops. Six submarines. Two gunboats. Three depot or auxiliary ships.
