MEAT EXPORT.

ANY LIMITATION OPPOSED. SHEEPOWNER9' VIEW. Whether it will be in the best interests of New Zealand primary producers if a limit is set to the quantity of meat to bo' imported into Great Britain from the Dominion has been fully examined by the executive of the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union and is discussed in the annual report. The conclusion has been unanimously reached tuat any quota or otner system which would tend to prevent expansion ot output for export would be Uighly detrimental to farmers here. "The executive is definitely of opinion that any restriction of output for export should be strenuously resisted by our delegates to Ottawa," states the report. "While fully supporting the suggestions lor inter-Imperial trade and reciprocal trading relations between Empire countries, the executive is opposed to any suggestion of limitation of imports of New Zealand produced meat and other primary products into Great Britain, and cannot in any way support proposals, the effect of which would appear- to be to limit production of primary produce within New Zealand for disposal on the Home market, or restrict in any way our right to market the whole of the exportable surplus of such products from the Dominion on the British market on their merits in open competition with similar products from sister Dominions and Great Britain. The original Proposals. "The executive is fully in accord with the original proposals as first set out, which were:— "J. A free list for Dominions and Crown Colonies giving preference to British goods. "2. A small tariff for Dominions rot giving preference "3. Art intermediate tariff against foreign countries giving preference to British goods. "4. A full tariff against foreign countries not giving preference. "The executive is of opinion that if this line is followed, valuable bargaining facilities will be available to the British Government in dealing -with foreign sources of supply without undue interference with trading facilities between the British Commonwealth of Nations. Your executive has stressed upon delegates representing primary producer exporters the urgent ieed for the minimum of restriction being placed on imports of Dominion pi'imary produce into Great Britain."
