Masters of averseas vessels of a draught approaching 24ft should not proceed inwards beyond Ahuriri Bluff Lighthouse bearing 210deg., where they should wait until boarded by a pilot.

BRITANNIC'S NEW COMMANDER. Captain P. K. Vaughan, D.S.C., haajbeen appointed commander of the motor-liner Britannic and took her out from Liverpool for tho first time on May 19th. He has succeeded Captain F. F. Summers, who is r.ow in charge of the sister ship Georgic. la 1892, at the age of sixteen years, Captain Vaughan joined the barque Craigmullen, owned by Messrs Staverley Taylor and Company, aa an apprentice. His first voyage was. by no means without excitement,' for when off Capa Horn, bound for Chile, the Craigmullen took fire. The master, fortunately, was able to put back to the .River Plate, where the ship was beached. Refloated and repaired, she put to sea again and Captain Vaughan spent three years in her. He served in the same firm's clipper ship Edderside, and took his master's ticket when in. tho barque Ballumbie. Captain Vaughan joined the "White Star Line as"fourth officer in 1901, three years later becoming second officer in the lonic in the New Zealand trade, in which he was well known. Whil-j chief officer in the Athenic in 1920, Captain Vaughan was presented with a pair of binoculars by the United States Government for bravery in rescuing the passengers and crew of the eteamer Mnnamar. During the war he was in the minesweeping service and commanded several fast mine-sweeping craft. Captain Vaughan received from his Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace, the Distinguished Service. Cross. His commands have included the Albertic and the Laurentic, and for some time Captain Vaughan was assistant commander of tho Majestic.
