PROPOSALS FOR WEEKLY COMPETITION. CLUBS TO DISCUSS SCHEME. Proposals for'a weekly intor-club competition were discussed at length at a meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the Kew Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last evening, and will be referred to the clubs for consideration at their annual meetings. The proposals wero embodied in tho detailed report of a sub-committee set up to consider conditions for the conduct of carnivbJb. Under the scheme it is proposed to hold regular weekly inter-club matches botween graded teams, commencing in January and lasting for five weeks. The grades will be first, Becond, third, and ladies' grades, all events will be on a scratch basis* and points will bo given on the basis of three for a first place, two for second, aud one point for third. The Saturday carnivals, which have been held hitherto, will, it is proposed, be held on Wednesday evenings at the Municipal Baths. After Mr B. J. Fyfe, who originally proposed the competition, had. enlarged on the recommendations in the sub-committee's report, some opposition was expressed to the general principles of the-scheme. Secretary's Opposition. Mr V. G. SpiUer (honorary secretary) opposed the scheme. Evening inter-club curnivals, as had been proposed, would not be successful, he thought, particularly from the social point of view. Ho thought that there would be difficulty in arranging for satisfactory grading under the competition scheme. Ho thought that a better idea would be to combine Bome of the weaker clubs to compete against major clubs. Mr Fyfe thought that the Saturday competition would lead to greater support of swimming by swimmers. He explained that the intor-club carnivals, at preseut held on Saturday, could be held on Wednesday evenings. t , 'i'he competition was • going to be i very difficult to run, said tho chairman (Mr C. K Itiordan). He agreed with Mr G. Lawrie in his contention that, after the first tew Saturdays, ewimmerß would lose interest, as had been the case with the polo competition, and teams woulitl find themselves short. Mr Kiordan stated that with Mr SpiLler he was afraid th«t under competition conditions the sport would lose its social value. Mr R. C Hunter epako in favour of the proposals. Miss D. Brown suggested that tho proposals should bo submitted to the clubs and their decision reported back to the centre. The only reason she had against tho. scheme was that it meant doing away with the Satuiday afternoon carnivals. Miss Brown moved that the proposals be Bulmijited to the clubs, after amendments had been suggested by the centre. Tho motion was seconded and carried. The committee then discussed the scheme, moking several amendments, which, with t*s6 sub-committco'a revrort (the main clauses of which are given below) will be discussed by the clubs.
