PRIVATE RAILWAY SIDINGS.
TO THE EDtTOB OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l have to thank you for permitting the matter of private railway sidings to be ventilated in your columns. Part 3 of the National Expenditure Adjustment Act states : "This part of this Act shall bind the Crown"; also, "The standard rate of reduction whether of interest or rent under any contract to which this Act applies is twenty per centum." This beinjr so, it would appear that the Railways Department is bound to reduce rents of private sidings by this amount. Furthermore, siding owners are using them at present only 50 per cent, of what they do in normal times, and are entitled to some allowance. I trust this subject will be taken up strongly by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, and fought to a successful finish.—Yours, etc., EQUITY. August 9th, 1932.
