PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROYALTY.

EXHIBITION FOR CHARITY. i Hundreds oi outstanding examples of I photographic art, many of them tho work of members of tho British and 1 other lloyal families, are included in an interesting exhibtion of photographs and snapshots at the premises of the D.I.C. The exhibition, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the relief of distress, has been arranged by Kodak. New Zealand, Limited, and was opened yesterday morning by the Mayor (Mr i). U. Sullivan, M.P.). Pictures taken by Royalty, particularly such intimate, informal snaps as are included, are usually reserved for lloyal eyes alone, but, responding to tho appeal on behalf of the distressed, tho Royal photographers (of whom eleven are represented in the collection), permitted their exhibition to the public, and tho result is that people are able to see a largo collection of really interesting and artistic photographs. Some of these are snapshots and studies of places of interest visited during Royal travels, while a series of informal groups of tho British Royal family—there is a charming study of Princess Elizabeth—are of special interest. Thero are also photographs i taken by the Queen of Denmark, the j Queen of the Belgians. Prince Gustav of Denmark, and the Duchess of | Aosta. A group of studies taken by Captain Frank Hurley during Mawson's expedition to Antarctica appeals to everyone. Tlfe group includes photographs of bird life, winch are already famous as exceptional examples of the photographer's art. In declaring the exhibition open, Mr Sullivan explained its having originated through Mr J. J. Rouse, governing director of Kodak, Ltd., who saw the fir*t display of tho photographs in London. He secured permission to exhibit the collection abroad. . It had been arranged, said Mr Sullivan, that one-quarter of the proceeds of their exhibition in Christchurch should bo devoted to tho funds of the King Edward Hospital, in London, and the remainder to tho Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Benevolent Committee. "The pictures, besides having such a personal interest, are cf superlative merit photographically, and have aroused great interest wherever they are shown," said the Mayor. "The contribution to the funds of the Returned Soldiers' Association Benevolent Committee are much needed, for there is much very real distress." Mr Sullivan then expressed appreciation of the efforts of tho exhibitors, and of the D.1.C.. Ltd., for placing .•space'at their disposal. Manv people attended the exhibition yesterday. The photographs uitl be on view during tho rest of tho uvek.
