RUGBY. CANTERBURY UNION. MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE.

The Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union met last evening, Mr A. E. McPhail presiding. Present were Messrs B. R. Masters, V. L. * Jensen, W. C. Dalley, T. Milliken, M. Leadbetter, A. Thompson, L. F. Thomson, A. Duggan, S. Hollander, W. Maxwell, E. V. Phillips, H. E. Davis, J. K. Moloney, S. F. Wilson, and Dr. W. S. Seed. Messrs A. E. McPhail and V. L. Jensen were appointed delegates to the epeeial meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union, which has been set down for September Ist, to consider the remits sent forward under the Canterbury Rugby Union's requisition. These include tho questions of replacement of players and of teams leaving the field at half-time. In addition the meeting will discuss a suggestion from the New South Wales Rugby Union that a conference should be held to consider obtaining dispensations from the rules of the game, particularly in relation to the kiek into touch rule. Resulting from the Wanganui "Union's earlier requisition, a special meeting concerning replacements only, was fixed (for August 11th. If the unions are agreeable the date of the new special meeting will be advanced to August 18th, otherwise the date of the original meeting will bo advanced to September Ist. The Otago Union advised that it was in favour of replacements during tho full period of the game, and reserved the right to move an amendment to this. effect at the special meeting. Representative Matches. Mr H. Davis was appointed manager of the Canterbury team for the representative match on Saturday next. The South Canterbury Union advised that it deßired an outside referee for its match at Christchurch on Saturday next. It was decided to let the New Zealand Bugby Union nominate the referee. The Otago Union advised that tho date of the Payne trophy match could not be altered, as requested by the Sydenham Club, from September 17th to August 27th, as the latter date was set down for a charity match. A letter from the senior B selectors •uggested that another match for the senior B representative team .might be arranged with one of the sub-unions. It was decided to refer the suggestion to the Competitions Committee, to investigate the possibility of arranging a match between the senior B grade representative team and the Canterbury B representatives, as a curtain-raiser to the Canterbury-West Coast match on August 27th. Aj» enquiry whether it would be pos- > nble to arrange a match between the Canterbury juniors and the Greymouth juniors for the same purpose was set •side in view of the first proposal. Postponed Challenge Match. Concerning the Challenge Cup match between Merivale and Sydenham which waa postponed from last Saturday, the Competitions Committee recommended that the clubs be asked whether they would play on September 3rd as a cur-tain-raiser to thei Wellington-Canterbury match. The difficulty was that both teams would be" short of men, who would be playing in the representative team. The alternative was to put the match off till very late. It was decided, to hold the matter ever and. to get in touch with the clubs; The Buller Union accepted the offer made in connexion with the Buller Challenge for the Banfurly Shield, to be played at Christchurch on September 10th. The approximate cost of the trip would be £llO to £115., Replying to the union's enquiry concerning what part, of the expenses it would be prepared to pay for the match it had asked for at Ashburton with the Sydenham team, the Ashburton Union advised that it would be unable to pay more than half the cost. The date originally suggested.- by the union for this match was September 10th> but an application was received last "evening for a match between Sydenham and the Star Club team, Timaru, on the same date, from the South Canterbury Union. The chairman. said no mention was made by the South Canterbury Union of the financial side of such a visit. It was decided to refer the matter to the -Fixtures Committee to get in touch with tl»e Sydenham Club, to s« exactly what arrangements, had been made with the Star Club, a suggestion being, that August 27th might do for the Ashburton match. ■ It was decided:to thank the unions that had entertained the Canterbury team during Its southern tour. LEAGUE TEST.

ISSUE OF COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS. ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE'S CRITICISM. A criticism of the Canterbury Rugby League for not inviting the wholo of the executive of the Canterbury Football Association to the second Test match, to be played at Monica Park on Saturday, was made at last evening's meeting of the Association. Members said that iu view of the courtesy extended to the League over the question of the use of English Park the Test game, all the executive should have been invited. The chairman of the League executive (Mr W. Cole) had stated when he interviewed the Association that such an invitation would be extended. The discussion arose over a letter received from the. League The letter enclosed two complimentary tickets for the League Test, and extended a cordial invitation to the members of the executive to attend the civic reception to the English team, at the City Council Chambers, at noon on Friday next. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to accept with thanks the tickets and the invitation to attend the reception. Mr O'Brien, who was the only member to voice his dissent, asked that his vote be recorded against tho motion. In regard to tho Test match, Mr Sellers said that in view of the courtesy extended to the League by the Association, it was surprising that the executive had not been invited "to a man." It would have been just a courtesy from one sports body to another. He would be sure to attend the reception. Mr Wade said that when Mr Cole waited on the Association he informed the members that the executive would be invited to tho match. Mr O'Brien: The Association has done well by the League; if wo had held them to contract regarding English Park they might have been in a difficult position. Mr Shouler: If the League executive has not seen fit to extend tho courtesy to us, that is entirely their business. Members may have their own views, but they should keep them to themselves. Mr Kennedy: Are we getting any compensation regarding English Park" The chairman: I have to meet an official to-morrow. The discussion then lapsed. ENGLISH TEAM'S ARRIVAL. Tho 3932 English Rugby League team, which is touring the Dominion, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday." Fifteen of tho tourists, accompanied'by Mr R. F. Anderson, financial manager, left later for Greymouth, where they will play against a West Coast representative side to-day. Mr G. F. Hutchens, the team manager and the coach, remained with tho rest of the men, who will train for the second Test game at Monica Park on Saturday. J. Sullivan, ''and probably one or two others who have gone to the Coast, will, also play in the Test side. Three of the Englishmen, F. A. Butters, G. Robinson, and W. Dingsdale, are on the injured list, and. the two firstnamed may ifot play again during the tour. The team to play on the West Coast, with the omission of two players, is:— Full-backs, A. J. Risinan, J l . Sullivan; three-quarters, B. Hudson, A. Atkinson, E. Pollard, J. T. Woods; outside half, I. J. Davies; scrum half, L. Adams; forwards, W. A. Williams, J. Lowe, J. Wright, M. Hodgson, A. E. Fildes, W. Horton, and J. Fcetham. The remainder of the team are staying at Warner's Hotel. They are:— F. A. Butters, S. Brogden, W. Dingsdale, A. Eilaby, B. Evans, 'N. Fender, G. The Boys' Division wrote asking for assistance in the billeting of 24 players and three delegates from the Otago branch of the South Island Football Association' on the nights of August 19th and 25th, on their

way to and from the boys' -tournament st Greymouth. Anyone who could assist was requested to get in touch with the Boys' Division. . Chatham Cup Finance. Mr Wade moved that the whole of tho gate-takings from the Thistle-Millerton (West Coast) Chatham Cup match at. English Paik on Saturday last be given to tho Millerton team towards its expenses . for tho South Island final in Dunedin. The Millerton people Had raised tho money to send tho team to Christchurch, he . said. Mr McKcown seconded. Mr Sellers said that ho wished to oppose tha motion, because the New Zealand Council had thousands of pounds invested, the proceeds from which were to be spent in fostering the game in the Dominion. The council and not the Canterbury Centre should give any assistance in connexion with Chatham Cup games. Supporting Mr Sellers, Mr O'Brien said that the association would only be making itself ridiculous by making a' grant that should be given by the New Zealand Council. The association was at present a laughingstock all over the Dominion for similar action. The chairman said that the money should be paid from tho £6OOO held by the council. An amendment by Mr Cawtheray that the association grant £5 to the Millerton team was not seconded, and tho motion was lost. North v. South Game. On the motion of Mr O'Brien, it was decided to write to the New Zealand Council requesting that the North v. South game be played in Christchurch. "It would be the finest boost for the game here that we could got," said Mr O'Brien. "I would like also to suggest that a sole selector be appointed for each island." The motion was carried, and it vu decided to point out the help the Eugby Union and Kugby League games were getting from the Ranfurly Shield and Test games, suggesting that the North v. South match would give the counter stimulus necessary to keep tho Association code well before the public. Interprovincial Matches. It was decided to write to the Wellington arid Westland Centres asking them to "forward suitable dates for representative games in Christchurch. No action was taken on a further suggestion by Mr O'Brien that a young team be sent on a tour.of the South Island, with tho objects of stimulating the gamo in Timaru and country districts, and also benefiting the young players in the province. Members stated that it was rather late in the season for bucli a tour, though the proposal was worthy of consideration next season. Draw for Saturday.
