CIVIL WAR IN BRAZIL.
100,000 COMBATANTS. ATTACK ON RIO DE JANEIRO PLANNED. (united press association—b* elxctrio TEWGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) SAO PAULO, August G. The civil war against the Vargas Government, involving 100,000 combatants equipped with modern areoplanes, tanks, and artillery, has grown into the biggest conflict in South American history, and has entered its fifth week with victory for either army apparently most remote. The Brazilian revolution quite overshadows the Bolivian-Paraguayan shadow-boxing, which so far has accounted for the loss of probably less than a dozen lives. The city of Rio de Janeiro has not for many years been so near a fighting area, and a few sanguinary encounters occurred almost in the city suburbs. The rebels' plan is an att&ck against Bio, and only by the most persistent offensive have the Federal troops been able to keep them away. The Brazilian Government is blockading tho shipping service to Santos, which is causing tremendous havoc in tho famous coffee port. The present outlook is that the fighting may continue for another month.
