September 10—Wellington X.O. TURF GOSSIP. Eiccarton Track Work. A heavy frost delayed the opening of track operations at Eiccarton yesterday j for over an hour, and the ground was still partly frozen when the first gallopers went out. The inside of the trial grass was in use, and it provided fast going until the surface softened under the sun's influence. There was a fair amount of fast work, mostly sprinting however, those horses which galloped on Sunday being let off with useful tasks only either on the trial grass or on the inside tracks. In Trial Hardies. Jayson drew attention to his prospects by beating Beacon Fire after covering seven furlongs in Imm 32sec, tho last six in lmin 18 3-ssec. A Speedy Filly. Palantua ran half a mile iu 49sce, and her stablemate, Prince Tractor, did a similar task in 50 2-ssec. Tho former should give a good account of herself in the Cashmere Plate. Noteworthy strode over a mile, the first half taking 50 2-ssec, and the full journey lmin 46sec. The West Coaster has had a course of schooling of late and has quietened down considerably. No Ailments. Morena galloped seven furlongs in lmin 32 8-ssec, tho last half in 53 3-ssec. He carried his hurdle horseman, E. Mackie, and did his work well. Morena was reported to be sore recently, and on this account was not produced at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting. There has been nothing amiss with him. however, and his defection was owing to having too much weight to carry on the soft track prevailing. Bational H. and Normandy were companions in an attractive task over five furlongs run in lmin 4 2-ssec, the last half taking BOsec. The former is in his best order for the week's racing. Veteran Betarns. Elude and Water Polo finished .together after reeling off half, a mile in SOBee. Elude will be ridden to-day by H. Donovan, who will don the colours for the flrst time for pome years. Knocklong, another from the West

Coast, sprinted three furlongs comfortably in 37 2-ssec. Burst of Speed. Topthorn ran from the mile to the flre furlongs post in 3osec, and although being eased up, got to the hallmile post in 51see. This speed will carry him a long way in to-day s enS& Night Recital eovercd half a mile in 50 2-osec. He has dono well since racing at Trentham, and will get some moi„- money here. . Dainty Ways and Paliu galloped six furlongs together in lmin 18sec, both finishing strongly. Cup Candidates. Ranelagh led Compris and Mount Boa over tho concluding stages of a J| alf mile sprint up the back in 49soe. They ran the first two furlongs in 2o 3-ssce, and three in 36sec. Coll and Ravine strode over seven furlongs in lmin 32 2-ssec. A Fit Favourite. Fast Passage and Rocket did useful work over the same journey. Fast Passage has caused no anxiety since she performed so creditably at Trentham, and the yielding nature of the track will suit her. " , Luces 3, Nassock, Snowfall, and Calham were allotted strong work over a mile. A Track Galloper. Hinging Cheer appeared lo be 2°* n § better than Consono at the end of half a mile run in 50 l-ssec. There should be no excuse for tho former if he fails in his engagement to-day. Merry Feel was allowed to run along half a mile in 53 2-ssec,. and his rider, A. E. Ellis, was kept busy restraining him. Over the Battens. Full Mark (B. Miles) was schooled over four of the insido hurdles. He narrowly missed crashing into the first owing to the slippery ground, and was very careful over the remaining fences. It was not a reasonable test. A Novice Steeplechaser. Quillfire (L. Dulieu) gave an excellent display in negotiating a round of ; the schooling steeplechase fences, and ! ■would have done better with a mato. ! He is another novice at the game, but I has done a good deal of schooling on : the West Coast. Winter Cup Surprise. One of tho biggest surprises in tho history of the Winter Cup .was that of 1017, when King Star won, just beating a very warm favourite, Parisian Diamond. That year tho three legs of the big treble—the Grand National Hurdle Race, the Grand National ! Steeplechase, and the Winter Cup--were run on the one afternoon. A strongly-fancied treble was Sleight of Hand, Master Strowan, and Parisian Diamond. The tWo first-mentioned had won, and certain speculators were on excellent terms with themselves till King Star ran on well in the straight and beat Parisian Diamond home by half a length. Coalition's Becord. Only one horse has ever won the three biggest New Zealand steeple-
