MAHAKIPAWA GOLDFIELDS, LTD. The min'e manager's report for tiie week, ending July 25th, is as follows : North Face, No. 1 East Crosscut — The crosscut has advanced 19ft, making a total progress of 32ft each of tiiu north drive. At '2sl't east', the bottom rock became softer, and largo stones became numerous in the wash. Over the last 7ft, prospects taken have been consistently good grade. South Drive, No. (j \vest Crosscut The crosscut has been turned more to thft south, and has advanced tilt, making a total of 58ft from the south drive. Wash passed through very stony, and of good grade, with a decided tendency to dip to the west. No. 5a West Crosscut —This crosscut, in the form of 1 an arch drive, had been started early in the year at 590 ft south, to follow to the west a small cross gutter containing gold values. As these values did not continue further than 13ft west, the crosscut had been stopped at 28ft west. It has now been decided to continue this face in order to reach the good grade wash dipping away west from No. G West Crosscut. No., 5a Crosscut has advanced Bft, making a total of 36ft west of south drive. The wash is changing to blue, and the last twcf prospects have shown gold values. Blocking south of No. 7 East Crosscut, and north of No. 9 East Crosscut has been in fair grade wasli dirt. The wash up on July 23rd produced 450z alluvial gold. ANTIMONY MINING. Antimony (New Zealand), Limited, lias been registered as a company to mine antimony at Endeavour Inlet, Marlborough. Capital, £20,000, in 40,000 shares of 10s each. Subscribers: W. J. Advice has been received from Buenos Aires that Mr James Carlile Whiteman, a native of Wangauui, has sold the South American rights of a patent carburettor for using crude alcohol for motors for 500,000 dollars. Ho has been working on the patent for 30 years, 110 has also floated companies in South Africa and London for exploiting the patent. ' In 1910 Mr Whitman'floated a company of £IOO,OOO in Christchurch to market the E. It. Godward carburettor, and later started on his own, inventing the "Supurb" carburettor, and forming a £50,000 company in New Zealand. Eventually the company went ■into liquidation. In the nieantimo Mr Whiteinan went to England to develop tho carburettor and a small Christchurch syndicate financed his visit to .South Africa to secure power alcohol for Experiments. 110 floated a company in Johannesburg and then went to iiuenos Aires to complete his work. A national campaign in favour of more private and personal spending is to be launched shortly by the Prime Minister of Great Britain. The increase of the unemployed is said to be duo to private economy; people are postponing the repainting of their houses, delaying the purchase of a new car, etc., and generally refraining from expenditure which is desirable rather than oxtravagant, thereby holding up trade.

HORSE FAIR. There -were 37 entries at the National Mortgage and Agency Company's liorse fair at Ashburton yesterday. The top price was £32, obtained for a fivo-year-old gelding, while an eigllt-yoar-old marc brought £3l. The principal prices were:— Geldings—Five years, £32; seven years, £2O 10s, .£2O; nine years, £l6, £ls; aged, £ls 10s, £4; five years, £25. Mares—Five years, £2O, £2B; eight years, £3l; aged, £B, £4, £7 10s. Hack—£3 10s. Ponies —£8, £1 10s. EGGS AND POULTRY. The Red Comb Egg and Poultry Company report full pennings on Wednesday and Saturday last. There was a noticeable firmness in values in most of the pennings. Sixty yearling White Leghorn hens from were sent forward by a client; being of good quality they realised 4s 6d to 5s 9d per pair. Both "sales opened well and contrary to the expectations of some of tho buyers, did not show any weakening towardsthe close, by which stage values had become 'firmer. Medium chickens, turkeys, White Leghorn cockerels, and yearling hens were eagerly sought after, but tho heavier chickens and ducks did not arouse the same competition. Country lines • comprised the bulk of the entries and prices all round were good. Eggs—Machine graded, tested, guaranteed fresh eggs; First grado Is 2d, second grade Is Id por dozen.
