MESSRS PYNE, GOULD, GUINNESS.

ANNUAL DANCE. Testerday was a red letter day for the staffs of the firm of Messrs Pyne. Gould, Guinness. Eeprescntatives of the firm's branch offices at Ashburton, Geraldine, Timaru, and Ivaikoura, and country agencies came to Christchurch for the day and a large number met at luncheon at the Shirley golf links, and afterwards played a golf-match— Stock department versus "Tlio Others." —"The Others" proving the winners. Those not wishing to play golf were entertained at a social gathering at the City office. At night the eighth annual dance was held at Frascati, music being supplied by the Bailey-Marston Orchestra. An exhibition dance was given by Miss Naare Hooper and Mr .Tohn Wait;, and a fancy tap dance by Mr J. McMullan. Lucky spot and snowball dances wero greatly enjoyed, and novelties were distributed amongst the dancers. A few of the guests played bridge, tables being arranged in alco%-es in the ballroom.

The members of the committeo were Misses Nelle Hall, and Billie Strachan, Messrs D. W. J. Gould, L. E. Owen, and W. 11. Fenner (lion, secretary). Miss Hall wore a sapphire blue net frock and chiffon velvet coatee to match and Miss Billie Strachan woro a cream lace frock. NURSE MAUDE BRIDGE PARTY. PROFIT OF *155. Mesdames A. J. Benzie (convener), J. S. Burns (treasurer), A. Manhire, W. Hoff, L; J. Lewis, A. Brown, Arthur Rose (secretary), Miss Heni Scott, and Miss M. Havelaar were members of the committee responsible for the organisation of a monster bridge party which was held in. the Winter Garden a few weeks ago, in aid of the funds of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. It was a record success and the balance-sheet, presented by Mrs Arthur Rose, shows the magnificent profit of £155 6s 7d. The gross receipts, including donations, amounted to £l7O 19s 9d. The hire of the Winter Garden, cost of labour, printing, etc., amounted to £ls 13s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £155 6s 7d. The accounts were audited by Messrs Anderson and Brown, public accountants and auditors. Last year the first big bridge party organised to help Nurse Maude in her great work of alleviating suffering, resulted in a net profit of about £ll6, which was considered most satisfactory. Encouraged by that success the committee decided to carry out this year's party on similar lines, but realising that money was scarce, the members said that they would be greatly pleased if they could clear £IOO. They worked hard towards that end and their energy and enthusiasm have been splendidly rewarded and their most sanguine hopes 'iaxeeeded. This morning a cheque for £155 Cs 7d will be presented to Nurse Maude. BRIDGE PARTY. A successful bridge party, in aid of the New Brighton branch of the Sailor's Society, was arranged by Mrs H. A. Bishop, Nelson street, New Brighton, and held at the home of her daughter, Mrs Alan A. Boon, ''lngestre," Lonsdale street, New Brighton. Mrs H. A. Bishop received the guests wearing a frock of black embossed georgette and a bridge coat of I floral velvet; Mrs A. A. Boon woro tabac brown faconne, relieved with orange; Miss lima Bishop pastel"floral georgette, and a bridge coat of sapphire blue velvet. The guests included Mr and Mrs W. S. Newburgh, Mr and Mrs W. Cooke, Mr and Mrs T. Johnston, jun., Mr and Mrs J. Spedding, Mr and Mrs T. Bobins, Mr and Mrs A. A. Boon, Mr and Mrs H. A. Bishop, Mesdames N. Johnston, J. S. Kelly, J. E. Armstrong, and F. Smith, Misses S. Wright, Bull, Cuthbert, Bert, lima Bishop, B. Murly, J. Oldbury, Matron Chamberlain (Rannerdale Home), Messrs K. C. Ward,'R. Bishop, J. Curnow, and J. Duncan. Gifts were sent by Mrs T. J. Lewis, Mrs A. Benzie, Miss Wliitcombe. Prizes were won by—First lady, Miss Cuthbert; first gentleman, Mr T. Johnston; first Hearts, Miss S.
