NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

, RAWHITI ROAD. A conference between Mr Id, 11. Andrews (chairman), Mr F. Thompson (General Manager), and Mr W. D. Covington (engineer), representing the Christchurch Tramway Board, and Mr E. A. M. Leaver (Mayor), Or. J. S. Ainsworth (chairman of -works), and Mr C. T. Middleton (Town Clerk), representing the New Brighton Borough Council, was held yesterday at the offices of the Tramway Board. The conference considered tho question of the spoil that had been removed by the Council from the tramway dump, and also the question of tho [ state of Bowhill road, cf whieh tho Board had complained to the Council. It was decided that the Council ! should ascertain what amount it could afford to expend on tho road in the near future, while the Board would consider what possibilities there were oi its meeting the Council by supplying spoil on favourable terms, and giving assistance in other directions. A. further conference is to bo held when this data is available. Tire Brigade. In consequence of the representations made to the local Unemployment Committee by the Borough Council, as to tlie necessity of unemployed single members of tho Brigade being found work in the Borough under the No. 5 .Scheme, three of tho volunteer firemen have started work this week. Labour Bureau. The Unemployment Board has consented to the request submitted to them by the Local Unemployment Committee on behalf of the Unemployed Association, that a relief worker under the No. 5 Scheme, should be allowed to devoto his time to visiting factories, warehoused, offices, and farms, iu an endeavour to find suitablo permanent or temporary employment in their own trades. Municipal Links. The four unemployed men -oho have been engaged in forming and turfing a new No. 3 green, under the direction of the greeukeper, have completed the job. A start is now to bo made on replacing the No. 6 green by turfing in the vicinity. St. Faith's Gliurcli. At a meeting of the Vestry of St. Faith's on Tuesday it was decided to form a Men's Club, with tho object of providing recreation and social amenities. Tho club is to be available for all members of tho Anglican Church. Mothers' Union. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the vicarage. Mrs T. M. Curnow (tho president) ! was in the cliair, and there was an attendance of 14 members. Jt was decided to support tho appeal for "Orphanage Day." Three members offered their services as collectors. Tea was provided 'by M rs Barter and Mrs do Roo. Social Evenings. , The winner at the weekly whist evening conducted at "Glenrowan" by the committee of the Plunket Society was Mrs A.- Henry. The bowlers' progressive whist evening attracted a good attendance, the highest scorer being Mr W. IT. Lareombo, the other winners being Mrs Stivill and Mr If. Beardsloy. Tho aggregate at the card evening organised by the School Committee was won by Mrs 11. Perrin, Mr Yarrell, jun., being the runner-up. For the evening's play, Mcsdames Cattermole, C. O'Donnall, and E. Barrett, and Messrs A. J. Taylor, MeKenzie, and 11. Brooks took the prizes. Tree Kindergarten. The newly-formed Mothers' Committee of the New Brighton Free Kindergarten held two functions this week for the purpose of raising funds. On Wednesday, Mrs March and Miss C. Brown were joint hostesses at a card evening held at "Glenrowan." On Thursday tho, usual whist evening held in the Association's rooms, was well attended, Mrs McLachlan and Mrs Skipworth being tho successful competitors, and Mrs IT. A. Atkinson the winner of the poker vase. Miniature Rifles. In a match in the president's grade against Ileathcote, at Heathcoto on Tuesday the New Brighton Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club team "were beaten by 12 points. The scores were Heathcoto 049, New Brighton 537. School Football. The position of the Ntew Brighton School lightweight team is unusual. During the season the team played every team in their section and won every gamo except that against Elmwood School, which pesulted in a draw. Elm wood had a corresponding record, so at the «nd of the round New Brighton and Elmwood played off. The score was 3 points each. The week following the teams met again, the result being still another draw, with no score. Last Tuesday tho teams played for the fourth time, and again there was no score. After thus playing four drawn games the teams met yesterday afternoon and after a strenuous game. Elmwood won on tho call of time by 3 points to 0. NORTH BEACH. A bridge afternoon in aid of the funds of the New Brighton Croquet Club was hold on Wednesday at the residence of the Misses Foster, in Bowhicll road. The players were Mcsdames Ivan Lamb, D. Wreathall, F. Salveson. M. Slater, J. McDonald,-. N. McGillivray, A. McCallum, S. Freeborn, Coatos, A. Dey, W. Cook, J. Spedding. Wilkerson, anjj Langley, Misses M. Mellon, C. Maizey, M. Foster, and S. Foster. Tho prizes were won by Mrs Spedding and Mrs Langley. At the conclusion of the play afternoon tea was served. North Beacli Park. As a result of the joint requests of tht North Beach Progress I.eague and tho School Committee, the reserve formerly known as the Osborne Terrace Reserve* will in future bo known as the North Beach Park. No change in control is to be made at present. Football. * This aitcruoon a team representing the North Beach and New Brighton Scouts will play a match against a team representing the Kaiapoi Boy Scouts. Tlie game is to be played on the.
