WINTER SPORTS.

EXCURSION TO ARTHUR'S PASS. Fine weather conditions appear to be likely at Arthur's Pass for winter sports to-morrow, and it is anticipated that a full capacity train will be necessary to convey excursionists. Light snow fell on Thursday, and the conditions for ski-ing have improved since last Sunday. The arrangements made 011 previous Sundays for tho return excursion train to atop at the Bealey quarry huts w*i!l bo repeated —35 trampcrs joined . the train at the huts last Sunday, and numy enthusiastic comments were made ref aiding the very fine walk from the ass to the huts. All who participated availed themselves of the hot soup provided. A number of fires were lighted at the huts, whieli consist of fouc rooms anl outhouses. The trampers were thus able to consume their soup, and at the same time enjoy the comfort of ■warm, cheery accommodation. railway offleer will again accompany trainpers to-morrow. The Arthur 'a Pass excursion train will be run for several weeks yet, and a trampers' train will run to Motukarara on Sunday, August 7th, leaving Christchurch at 8.10 a.m. The Technical College Tramping Club have arranged a tramp from Motukarara on this date, and the usual tramps from Motukarara will be available. A moonlight excursion has been arranged for Wednesday, August 10th, by the train leaving Ohristchurch at 4.43 ; p.m. On this occasion trampers will walk back to the Cashmere tram terminus from Motukarara, a distance of approximately 34 miles. The moon will be !n the first quarter, but it rises early and will be high in the sky. A "mystery" tramp is being arranged for Sunday, August 14th. The train will leave Ohristchurch for an unknown destination, and trampers, under tho guidance of railway officers, will be able to try out the new route. The destination of trampers will remain a mystery until after the train leaves Ohristchurch. The train crew will receive sealed instructions, and the station officials will simply be instructed to provide a train at a certain hour. The exact location of tho first tramp will not be finally chosen until a day j or so before the date fixed for the hike | —August 14th.
