HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was held last evening, Mr O. W. B. Anderson presiding. There was a large attendance. The annual report, previously published, was adopted. The balance-sheet, also adopted, showed an excess of income over expenditure of £l3l 7s sd, and a total excess of assets over liabilities of £6BO 12s 4d. On the financial side the year had been successful, said Mr Anderson. The membership had remained stationary for some time at about 1400. It was known that when the resignations already sent in w.ere counted the numbers would show a - considerable setback, Enthusiasm was necessary, and the Society offered such benefits in the matter of horticulture that there was no reason why" new members should not continue to be attracted to it. Tor this year further extensions of the Society's activities had. been recommended, including increasing the prize money and putting the lilac and delphinium show on a similar basis to that of the successful show held in January last. A notable new development was the formation within the Society of a lily circle. That evening he concluded his seventh year as chairman of the executive, said Mr Anderson, and lie would like to see some other member take over the position.
