POLITICS IN FIJI.
A SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM. / LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OPENED. (UNITED PBEB3 ASSOCIATION—BT iLXCTHIO THJLBGEArH —COPYEIdHT.) (Received June 2nd, 5.5 p.m.) SUVA, June 2. . The Legislative Council opened this morning. The Governor's Address was couched in optimistic terms. It declared that iu the main centres of the Colony's principal industry, sugar, along tho North-West Coast of Viti Levu and Labasa, there was a spirit of optimism in marked contrast to the pessimism in Suva. The Address did not agree with the suggested reduction of Civil Service salaries, inferring that if salaries were reduced lyjw taxation must be imposed. It was announced that tho Hawaiian Pineapple Company had terminated growing experiments in Fiji, and that a record crop of rice was anticipated sufficient for local consumption. The Address also announced that the King was returning to Fiji the mace presented by King Calcobau.
