SOUTHLAND BEECH.

POSSIBILITY OF BIG ORDER FROM ENGLAND. (PEBSS ASSOCIATION TKLCaUi.II) INVERCARGILL, June 2. An enquiry been received from England by the sawmillors of Southland for 9,000,000 feet of Southland beech to be used in the manufacture of motor bodies. On behalf of the sawmillers the following statement was made to-day by Mr D. J. Wesney:— An enquiry has been from London for a very large quantity of silver beech for motor body work. It is estimated that if business is forthcoming steady work will be provided for 300 men on full time for about eighteen months. This would embrace all workers in the beech areas. If the order is placed it will create a boom in the industry, and besides providing labour for the men themselves it will assist the railways and will provide work at the Bluff. Indirectly, several industries and various tradespeople would benefit. . It is understood that the negotiations are continuing.
