Pago, S.M., dismissed a charge against Charles Maurice Brooks, aged iki, a labourer. It was alleged that following the riots of May 10th and 11th, the accused was arrested on May 13th on warrant for the non-payment of a fine and when searched a small tin of pepper was found in his pocket. According to the police, the accused stated that on the evening prior to his arrest a report had been circulated among those in tho Communist Hall that a raid by temporary police was contemplated, and ho purchased pepper to protect himself and the hall against such a raid. Tho Magistrate said he thought that tho words l, or other offensive weapon or instrument" must bo construed on the ejusdem generis principle, as applying only to offensive weapons of a similar species to* those enumerated viz.. gun, pistol, sword, and bludgeon.
