FOREIGN CONCERT ARTISTS.

ENTRY INTO BRITAIN. . (BRITISH OFFICIAL . WIRELESS.) RUGBY, March 23. Misapprehensions which appear to have arisen, particularly in the United States of America, regarding the attitude of his Majesty 'a Government towards actors and concert artists coming into this country, were removed in the House of Commons in a statement by the Parliamentary Secretary for Labour (Mr R. S. Hudson): He said the' Labour Minister (Sir Henry Betterton) thought it necessary to scrutinise more closely the applications, in respect of concert artists, but otherwise no change in policy had been made or was contemplated. Actually in the past six months, out of a total of 1161 applications by foreign artists to appear in concert theatres or variety halls, only 60 were refused. As regarded the United States there had been 135 applications and seven'refusals, none of which affected actors or concert artists.

The proposed New Zealand trade mark for goods made in the Dominion has not been lost sight of by the Manufacturers' Federation, according to a report received by the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association: The Minister for Justice* has been communicated with, and has been asked as to the possibility of the Government putting through a measure to protect the mark, and it is hoped to have his reply in time for the meeting of presidents of manufacturers' associations to be held in Wellington on April Bth. The attitude of the Federation is that the mark should be a hall mark of quality, and that each association affiliated with the Federation should control and license it to those manufacturers who can guarantee that their goods are up to the hall mark standard.
