TARIFFS IN EUROPE
SURTAX ON BRITISH GOODS. HANDICAP OF EXCHANGE. (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIEELESS.) (Received March 16th, 7 p.m.) RUGBY, March 15. Replying to questions in the House of Commons to-day, Mr Walter Runciman (President of the Board of Trade) said the Government had made it clear to the French Government that it took exception in principle to the imposition of tho French surtax on any British goods.
llie Minister also s , aid the question was being considered of making representations to tho Portuguese Government regarding its recent decree increasing the duties by 20 per cent, on most descriptions of goods. Mr lluneiman, questioned &s to the proposed Franco-Hungarian agreement to provide a clearing-house arrangement for the mutual liquidation of the export trade, said that, after full consideration, the Government had reached the conclusion that no clearinghouse system had yet been devised that would bo of advantage to British trade, fie did not think any such system would eliminate tho handicap of exchange restrictions in existence on the Continent.
