ASHBURTON. IN BANKRUPTCY. A petition in bankruptcy has boon filed by William Joseph Longlev, restaurant keeper, of Ashburton, and a meeting of creditors will be held at the office of the Assignee (Mr A. J. Ching). 1 Basketball Club Formed. At a fleeting on Tuesday evening, over which Mr E. C. Bathurst presided, it was decided to form a basketball club in Allenton. The following committee was appointed to make preliminary arrangements: —Misses A. Graham, R. Welsh, J. Blackwood, N. Stringer, and M. Jary. Tennis. The Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association will play a representative match with the EUesmerc SubAssociation on the Ashburton club's courts on Saturday. The Mid-Canter-bury team is as follows:—M. Ryburn and Miss E. Meredith. Swimming. The concluding events in connexion with the annual swimming sports of the boys of the Ashburton High School were held yesterday. In the 25 yards breaststroke championship, B. Knox clipped 4 3-ssec off his own record, established last year, doing the distance in 19sec. The 50 yards freestyle record was equalled by H. Milsom, who covered the distance in 29sec. The school championship was won by H. Milsom. The results are as follows: Twenty-five yards breaststroke (3): B. Knox 1, H. Milsom 2, E. Guildford 3. Boxing. The novice tournament arranged by the Ashburton Boxing Association to be held in his Majesty's Theatre to-morrow night promises to be an attractive one and a number of fast contests should eventuate. Two special bouts between well-known local boxers will also be staged. To meet the times tho prices have been made as reasonable as possible. Technical Old Boys' Football Club. The annual meeting of the Technical Old Boys' Football Club was held last evening, Mr W. Crawford presiding. The balance-sheet showed that there was a credit balance of £2 3s. The annual report stated that the third-grade team had won seven games, lost five, and drawn one, and Mr L. Cooper's medal for the most improved player would go to D. Porter. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Referees' Association was held last evening, when Mr E. McDougall presided. The annual report stated that the year had been uneventful. The referees had interpreted the rules well and controHed the games in a creditable manner. The' finances of the Association were not in a very satisfactory position, but if subscription arrears were paid up it would help the 'position considerably. The balance-sheet showed that the year commenced witlv a credit of £1 6s 10d and concluded with a debit of 3s Id. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. R. Featherston; vice-president, Mr E. McDougall; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. A. Furby; representatives on Referees' Appointments Board, Messrs Featherston and McDougall; auditor, Mr G. Y. Furby; executive, Messrs' Featherston, McDougall, and G. A. Furby. Messrs J. McMillan, E. McDougall, and L. Hadley were appointed to represent the Association ?it the annual meeting, of the New Zealand Rugby Referees' t Association at Timaru on March/25th. On the of Messrs G. W. Brown and McDougall it was decided to write'to the Ashburton Rugby Union stating that it was the considered opinion of the Association that the 3-2-3 scrum formation would be beneficial to football in Ashburton and suggested that it be given a trial.

LAURISTON. The annual meeting o£" the Lauriston Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was* held in the school. Present: Messrs 0. Symes (president), W. Hammond, F. Franks,- G. Franks, W. E. Smith, J. McQuilken, W. Copland, A. Goodwin, E. Doak, and C. Fyfe. Correspondence was received from the Auckland and Wellington branches of the Union, also from the Women's Division (Wellington). Mr G. Franks reported on the negotiations made with the Railway De-

partnient concerning alterations and improvements to the Lauriston railway trucking yards. Mr O. Symes (president) presented the annual report, which stated that in spite of a difficult period, the year's activities had been profitable and progressive. Mr F. Temple and W. ,J. Owen, and Mesdanies G. Burrows, E. McKeekan. G. R. Cleeve, M. Stone, H. Fryer. H. Reid (non. secretary), and A. Bonnington (Librarian). The secretary reported that receipts for the month were subscriptions £2 Bs, rent £9 15s. Accounts amounting to' £4 2s were passed for payment. The Librarian reported that there had been a slight falling off in the number of subscribers. On the suggestion of the chairman, it was agreed to make a special canvass for new subscribers.
